English 12 Fall 2007-08 Detailed Study
Aims:
The aims of the Language A1 program are to:
- encourage
a personal appreciation of literature and develop an understanding
of the techniques involved in literary criticism;
- develop the
students' powers of expression, both in oral and written communication,
and provide the opportunity of practicing and developing the
skills involved in writing and speaking in a variety of styles
and situations;
- introduce
students to a range of literary works of different periods,
genres, styles and contexts;
- broaden the
students' perspective through the study of works from other
cultures and languages;
- introduce
students to ways of approaching and studying literature, leading
to the development of an understanding and appreciation of the
relationships between different works;
- develop the
ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of written text;
- promote in
students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, literature.
Objectives:
Having followed the Language A1 program candidates will be expected
to demonstrate:
- an ability
to engage in independent literary criticism in a manner which
reveals a personal response to literature;
- an ability
to express ideas with clarity, coherence, conciseness, precision
and fluency in both written and oral communication;
- a command
of the language appropriate for the study of literature and
a discriminating appreciation of the need for an effective choice
of register and style in both written and oral communication;
- a sound approach
to literature through consideration of the works studied;
- a thorough
knowledge both of the individual works studied and of the relationships
between groups of works studied;
- an appreciation
of the similarities and differences between literary works from
different ages and/or cultures;
- an ability
to engage in independent textual commentary on both familiar
and unfamiliar pieces of writing;
- a wide-ranging
appreciation of structure, technique and style as employed by
authors, and of their effects on the reader;
- an ability
to structure ideas and arguments, both orally and in writing,
in a logical, sustained and persuasive way, and to support them
with precise and relevant examples.
Grading Policy:
All students
will be graded in points.
Final marking period grades will be determined on a straight percentage
basis
90-100%--A
80-89%---B
70-79%---C
60-69%---D
50-59%---E
Work not attempted will be recorded as a 0.
Assignments deemed academically dishonest will receive a grade
of 0.
Approximate point
values for various activities are as follows:
Tests—50-100
points
Compositions—30-75
points
Other
major assignments—30-75 points
Short
writing—5-25 points
Classwork
and other daily assessments—5-20 points
Quizzes—5-25
points
Late work will
be graded up to one grade down if handed in between the due date
and the final deadline. Work handed in after the deadline will
receive an E.
Missed tests,
quizzes, and other assignments must be made up promptly.
Reteaching/Reassessing
Policy:
Students will
be allowed to be reassessed on assignments as determined by the
IB English 12 team. Students will be informed ahead of time when
an assignment may be reassessed. Only students who meet the due
date may be reassessed on an assignment. They must show evidence
as determined by the teacher and team that they have made an attempt
to relearn the material before taking the reassessment. Examples
of that evidence include, but are not limited to:

Coming to the teacher for extra help
•
Attending TAP
•
Completing practice assignments
•
Making corrections on the original assessment/assignment.
Reassessment must be done in a timely fashion according to a schedule
determined by the teacher and team. The reassessed grade will
replace the original grade.
Class
Rules/Policies:
Treat everyone
with respect.
Come to class prepared with necessary materials.
Come to class on time.
Students are expected to follow the guidelines for academic integrity
as outlined in their student handbooks and in the IB honor policy
Follow the school rules as outlined in your Student Handbook.
