Journalism I

Overview: Journalism I incorporates all the processes involved in newspaper writing, management, and production: from ideas to printing to distribution.

Units of Study:
1. Instruction in the unique content of news and its sources.

2. Instruction and application in the skills of newswriting, including gathering information, interviewing, writing leads, writing headlines, and organizing the articles

3. Instruction and application in finding subjects for and in writing features, news, editorials, and columns.

4. Instruction and application in writing clearly and concisely.

5. Instruction and application in outline writing, proofreading, copy editing, page makeup and overall newspaper design and layout.

6. An introduction to the role of journalism in American society.

7. A study of the responsibility of journalism, including ethics.

8. A study of press law.

9. A comparative of study of contemporary newspapers and on-line journalism.
NB: each Friday during the year is a “lab” day in which students work with such papers as The Washington Post, USA Today, N.Y. Times, Montgomery Journal, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Times. Each student is to bring in his assigned paper on Friday.

Writing assignments will be consistent with the material covered each week and will usually consist of the writing of a story type covered in class. Due dates of story assignments will be clearly stated at the time of the assignment. NO work in Journalism I is accepted late. Grade is determined by writing assignments, tests, as well as student’s participation in class discussions and completion of homework assignments and lab assignments.

Class will also view films which have relevance to newspaper writing and production.
Class will also have the opportunity to hear working journalists describe their professional responsibilities.
