AIDS Walk Washington 2007 Essay Contest. Deadline: June 15, 2007

On Saturday, 10/6, the 21st annual AIDS Walk Washington will once again make its way through the Nations Capital. This event raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for Whitman-Walker clinic to provide medical care and support services for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. As part of the effort to increase community awareness and involvement, they are offering 9th – 12th graders the opportunity to participate in an AIDS Walk Essay Contest. Grand prize winner will have the opportunity to read their work at the event, and have their work featured on the AIDS Walk Washington website. DeSales University 22nd Annual Poetry Festival – Win a Four Year full-tuition scholarship. Deadline: April 13, 2007. Deadline to register to attend the festival is April 16, 2007.

All high school students are encouraged to enter in order to participate in a full-day of poetry festivities to be held on Friday, April 20th on the rural campus of DeSales University. For more information or to register, call (610) 282-1100, ext. 1317.

 

The Drexel University 2007 High School Ten-Page Playwriting Contestfor Juniors and Seniors. Deadline: Postmarked no later than December 1, 2006.

What kind of play can you write in 10 pages? It’s up to you! 10 pages are long enough for love to be found and lost (or lost and found), an immovable object (or person) to be moved, an argument to be started (or ended). No less than 3 pages and absolutely no longer than 10 pages! No fair submitting on legal size paper or using a really small font! Contact your English teacher for the complete list of guidelines and entry form.

 

Education Department of the Folger Shakespeare Library High School Fellowship Program. Deadline: April 23, 2007.

Program runs from September 4 through December 18, 2007. Open to Juniors and Seniors. Award is a fellowship to participate in “Shakespeare: Texts, Contexts, and Performances,” a series of seminars, workshops, and performances. Check with your English teacher for information or visit www.folger.edu/fellowship for all materials necessary to enter.

 

F. Scott Fitzgerald Short Story Contest. Deadline: July 13, 2007

No restrictions on subject matter. First prize is $1000 plus an invitation to speak briefly about the story at the 12th Annual F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference award ceremony in October 2007. Winning entry will be published in the Potomac Review. 3 runner-up prizes of $200 each will be awarded at the conference. Rules for entries will be posted in Computer labs, in the main English hall, and in the Contest Info binder in A320.

 

Goucher College’s 22nd Annual Writing Contest for WomenTheme is “Women Writing about Women.” Deadline is January 6, 2007.

In the early spring, contest winners will be invited to participate in a series of events celebrating “Women Writing About Women,” culminating in a public reading by a noted writer-in-residence. Entries should be original pieces of writing: short fiction, drama, essays, or collections of three (3) or more poems. Please contact your English Teacher for the complete list of guidelines for submission. Winners will be notified by March 1, 2007.

 

Rider University’s 28th Annual High School Writing Contest3 categories: ESSAY (personal), FICTION (short story), and POETRY. Postmark deadline: Dec. 14, 2007

2007 Schubmehl-Prein Essay Contest for University of Notre Dame – For Juniors in the 2006-2007 academic school year. Deadline: May 31, 2007

Topic of essay is: “What is needed to secure the software that controls our nation’s critical infrastructure?” First place award is $1,000, the second place award is $500, and the third-place award is $250. Also, winning entries in previous years have been published in the Association for Computing Machinery’s Computers and Society online magazine. “Together We’re Better” Essay Contest – for middle and high school students. Deadline is November 22, 2006.

The Arc of Maryland, Inc., in partnership with the Maryland State Dept of Education, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, the Maryland Coalition for Inclusive Education, and the Maryland Dept of Disabilities is pleased to announce the 6th Annual National Inclusive Schools Week during December 4 – 8, 2006. This year they will again offer the “Together We’re Better” Essay Contest for middle and high school students.

National Inclusive Schools Week provides an opportunity for schools across the nation to celebrate the diverse abilities of all students. Details of the Essay can be found by contacting your English Teacher directly. 500 word essay, and the theme is, “Together We’re Better.” Essay should address why inclusive schools are so important and how students with disabilities contribute to their schools and communities.

There is a very short time frame to enter. The deadline is Nov. 22, 2006.

V-Thousand Films and J. Tacomb Foundation Annual Screenwriting ContestDeadline for submission is December 1, 2006.

This is a great opportunity to write and express yourself with your very own screenplay. 5000Films and J. Tacomb Foundation will award $500 cash for the best screenplay. Your screenplay should be about something related to the writer’s life, something you are going through, something about being a student, teenager, or just something about what you go through everyday. For the past 26 years, YoungArts, a program of National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA), has recognized and rewarded high school seniors (during 2007 – 2008 school year, or if you have already graduated, you must be either 17 or 18 on 12/1/07) in the disciplines of cinematic arts, dance, jazz, classical music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing.
