Course Description:

The overarching themes for the secondary Level 2 Curriculum are "Identity," "Adventure," Family," and "Courage." Each theme covers enough material for nine weeks of study. Included are activities designed to develop language awareness, critical literacy, and development of the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Vocabulary development targeted grammatical structures, elements of literature, writing activities and discussion are all an integral part of the Level 2 curriculum.

Methods of Assessment:

A variety of formal and informal methods of assessment will be used, including rubrics, portfolios, observations, quizzes, tests, and semester examinations.

Assessment categories are: listening counted as 10% of the grade,
speaking counted as 10% of the grade,
homework for completion counted as 10% of the grade,
classwork counted as 20% of the grade,
Quizzes counted as 20% of the grade, and
Tests/Projects counted as 30% of the grade.

Learning Strategies:

We will use several strategies including reading, brainstorming, use of rubrics, the brief constructed response, contextual setting, dictionary skills, debating, quickwrite dialogue, and descriptive language.

Language Focus/Grammar:

Language Focus/Grammar points will include review of subject-verb agreement, present tense, adjectives, present continuous, simple present and past tense, comparative adjectives, habitual past tense, quantifiers, modals, irregular plural nouns, reflexive pronouns, review of adjectives, introduction of future tense, present real conditionals, indefinites pronouns, and future tense.

Required Supplies:

     1.  one 3 ring binder
     2.  paper
     3.  dividers
     4.  pens and pencils
     5.  yellow highlighter

Expectations:

     1.  Students will arrive on time and seated when the bell rings.

     2.  Students will come prepared for class, bringing their materials and their homework with them.

     3.  Students will be courteous and polite to the teacher and to each other at all times.

     4.  Students are responsible for keeping track of all returned materials.

     5.  There will be no food, soda, or electronic devices allowed in the classroom.

Our Team's Plan for Reteaching and Reassessing:

  • Only those tasks identified in advance as available for re-assessment can be re-assessed; all other tasks cannot be re-assess.
  • Re-assessment will only take place after the student has demonstrated evidence of relearning the material by
                  1. coming to the teacher for extra help
                  2. completing previous assignments
                  3. making corrections on the original assignments/assessments

Prior to the distribution of interim and final grades, your grades will be printed for you to share with your parents.
