Theme 1     LE PETIT PRINCE              weeks 1-9 (Q-3)

Students will be reading all 27 chapters of the unedited form of Le Petit Prince by Antoine de St. Exupéry during the first marking period of this semester. Students will be doing a comprehensive analysis of the themes in the story including symbolism and characterization. Activities will include vocabulary learning , practicing grammar concepts present in the story, reading and listening for comprehension, and writing.

Structures will include compound tenses, object pronouns, and subjunctive.

Students will be doing group presentations on selected chapters of the book.


Theme 2     PROVENCE                         weeks 1-4 (Q-4)

This unit will include an overview of the history, culture, art, music, literature, and cuisine that have made this province world reknown. We will be reading a short story and watching a movie by Marcel Pagnol, a well-known provençal author.

Structures will include passive voice and pronouns

Students will be doing individual oral presentations on the topic of their choice.


Theme 3     ADOLESCENCE                 weeks 5-8 (Q4)

We will be discussing all the joys and problems of being a teenager in France compared with the United States. Topics will include relationships with peers and families, school, extracurricular activities, jobs, and leisure pursuits.

Structures will include possessives and negatives.

Students will be doing individual oral presentations on a topic of their choice.

 

NOTES

The materials used in this course include the workbook Reprise, articles from Clés de l’Actualité Junior, a French student newspaper, videos, DVDs, CDs, short stories and exercises/excerpts from various books.

During each period of the syllabus, students will participate in activities, written, oral, and auditory, consistent with the Program of Studies. For example, they will write compositions as well as interactive reading exercises. We will continue extensive vocabulary expansion work.

Evaluation will be based on oral presentations, class discussions, listening comprehension, homework, group activities, tests, quizzes, compositions, summaries, and personal reflections.
