Grade
Level: 9 - 12
Course
Description:
This course continues Latin IA, continuing with the same textbook
Ecce Romani IA initially (chapters 13-17) and moving
on to the new textbook (Ecce Romani IB) before February.
Our plan is to cover chapters 18-24 during semester 2 and to strengthen
vocabulary from the first semester as well. All Latin students
(I- IVH/AP) are strongly encouraged to partake in the National
Latin Exam (a 40 minute/40 multiple choice exam) administered
in mid-March. Latin IB curriculum coincides with the goals for
the NLE and the National Standards set for Latin.
Memorization
of vocabulary, forms and patterns is required; recognition and
usage of correct Latin grammar is also one of the goals for this
course. The fundamentals and methods of study acquired in this
course form the foundation for Latin IIA. There are also critical
thinking skills that are applicable to other disciplines in addition
to English and other foreign languages.
Course Objectives:
- to further develop
knowledge of the Roman family, its customs, practices, challenges
- to enhance general
language learning techniques and aptitudes, including facility
with English (and the “SAT vocabulary” associated
with Latin and Greek roots)
- to improve reading
comprehension of Latin, also reading aloud frequently
- to encourage students
to enjoy Latin further by translating children’s books
of their choice into Latin as part of an ongoing 3rd quarter
project.
Grading Scheme:
A total points system for the following areas: class work, quizzes,
unit tests (usually based on four chapters), and designated homework
assignments that reflect formative assessments The semester exam
concludes with a written final exam, worth 25% of the overall
grade, in keeping with the MCPS foreign languages curriculum policy.
No exemptions are made, although seniors have another version
of this exam.
The Weekly
Outline follows objectives for the chapters 18-27 in
the first two textbooks of the Longman series, Ecce Romani
so that Chs. 18-21 (Unit test 4) is completed by mid-March, Chs.
22-24 (Unit test 5) by late April and Chs. 25-27 (Unit Test 6)
by June 1.
