Grade
Level: 10 - 12
Course Description:
In 2004-2005 the AP Latin Literature
was piloted and replaced Latin IV Honors. It continues this year
with Catullus and Ovid as the authors. Information on the AP Latin
Literature exam requirements are available through the AP website,
or simply email the instructor for further information. The list
is exhaustive, but textbooks are excellent!
In Fall 2006 those who prefer to
take Latin IVA Honors (which has been offered in years past) may
sign up for this course in order to read a wider variety of Latin
prose and poetry. The Latin IVA-BHonors sequence will have goals
similar to those found in IB Latin courses: advanced readings
of prose and poetry, but with a broader base than those of AP
Latin Literature or AP Vergil. The Latin IVA Honors students will
also continue to use the final book of the Ecce Romani series,
reinforcing grammar and prose.
Any student who wishes to take either
Latin IVH or AP Latin Literature should be highly motivated and
be able to work responsibly and independently. Permission of the
instructor is advised. Note also that beginning 2005-2006 there
are also two students piloting the IB curriculum with Ovid as
the prescribed author and love poetry of Horace and Catullus as
a prescribed topic; Roman epic is also a prescribed topic that
will be continued in 2006-2007 (Book 2 of Virgil’s Aeneid).
Grading Scheme:
A total points system for the following
areas: class work, quizzes, unit tests and designated homework
assessments. Each student is responsible for researching two Roman
authors representing poetry or prose of a given period; these
semester projects will be presented in class prior to winter break.
Each semester concludes with a written final exam, worth 25% of
the overall grade, in keeping with the MCPS foreign languages
curriculum policy. No exemptions are made.
