| B-CC High School was selected
as the recipient of two prestigious music awards in 2004
for its excellence in music education: GRAMMY Foundation’s
Grammy Signature School and the Recording Academy’s
GRAMMY on the Hill Heroes Award.
Just as the GRAMMY Award recognizes excellence in recording,
the GRAMMY Foundation Signature Schools Program
recognizes the top public high schools in the country for
outstanding commitment to their music education programs.
B-CC High School was one of 41 public high schools across
the country to receive this recognition, and a $1,000 grant
to benefit its music program.
The GRAMMYs on the Hill Heroes Award “recognizes
those who improve the lives of music makers, and those who
use the power of music to improve the lives of us all.”
Sharing the 2004 award with the B-CC High School Music Department
were former First Lady, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.),
Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.), and singer Natalie Cole.
At the GRAMMYs On The Hill event on September 8, 2004,
at the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel, Acting Principal
Sean Bulson and music teachers Marshall White and Matthew
Hartman accepted the award on behalf of B-CC HS. Joining
them at the event were Community superintendent Dr. Frank
Stetson, the county directors for MCPS music education,
two students, three parents, Board of Education member Patricia
O'Neill and Congressman Chris Van Hollen. Judy Collins and
the Cowboy Junkies were the featured performers at the event.
