Prerequisite: Concert Choir and/or audition
Course Outline:
This course allows select singers to refine their vocal
skills in the highly demanding small ensemble setting. Students
sing a variety of music written for small vocal ensmbles,
often without accompaniment. Students learn and practice
advanced music reading skills and gain an increased understanding
of music theory. They use critical listening skills to evaluate
and refine thier performances. The ensemble has a very active
performing schedule and can offer leadership opportunities
for student conductors, accompanists, and soloists.
Course Outcomes:
The student will be able to:
1. perform small ensemble music in many styles and
languages;
2. sing selected repertoire from memory;
3. demonstrate adnvanced skills in vocal production,
expressive interpretation, and music reading;
4. sight-read music at a difficulty level of 3+ on
a scale of 6;
5. improvise stylistically appropriate ornamentation
to a given melody;
6. make critical judgements about selected works in
terms of expressiveness, form, and style;
7. develop criteria for evaluating performances by
small choral ensembles;
8. discuss the way music complements poetry in a work
for small vocal ensemble;
9. describe the history, style, and aesthetic aspects
of the small vocal ensemble;
10. earn the MCPS Student Service Learning hours component
through individual, small group, and/or large group public/private
performances, such as concerts, festivals, exhibitions,
aesthetic creation including planning and production of
documents and provide a written/oral reflection of each
performance.
