Course of Study

European History 1750-1900

Unit I Napoleon I and the Napoleonic Wars
Unit II The Revolutions of 1848 and the “Isms”
Unit III Italian and German Unification to 1871
Unit IV Russia in the 19th century
Unit V Germany : Bismarck, 1862-1890
Unit VI Imperialism

By the end of the second semester students will have studied European History to the end of the 19th century. Students will have examined key themes and ideologies of this time period. Political, diplomatic, intellectual, economic, cultural and social themes will be integrated into all units of study.

Objectives

Students will be expected to:

     -comprehend, analyze, evaluate and integrate source material critically as historical evidence

     -demonstrate historical understanding of 19th century European history through the acquisition, selection, effective use and synthesis of knowledge

     -place events in their historical context

     -explain the causes and effects of historical continuity and change

     -present arguments that are clear, coherent, relevant and well substantiated

     -to analyze critically and evaluate theories and historical concepts

Homework

1)   Homework will be assigned on a regular basis
2)   The majority of your assignments will involve reading and research
3)   You must take notes on your reading assignments
4)   Reading check ups will accompany each assignment

Make-up Work

1)   It is your responsibility to make up all missed work
2)   If you are in school, arrive late or depart early and miss my class I expect you to call a friend or stop by to get the assignment
3)   If a test has been announced and you are absent the day before you will be expected to take the test
4)   If you are absent on the day of test expect to take it on the day you return unless you are absent for several days
5)   You should get the phone number of one of your classmates so that you can find out about missed work

Grading

1)   Your grade will be determined as follows:
      Assessments             70%
      Classwork/Projects    30%

2)   Final grades will be determined as follows:
      90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 0-59 E

Reassessments

The following procedures will be used and apply only to reading checks:

1.   Students will need to attend a 45-minute reteach session at lunch or after school immediately following the return of an assessment. Please note--student needs to bring lunch because the session does not allow for time to go pick up lunch.

2.   The retest will occur at lunch or after school on the Friday immediately following the reteach session and will be a short answer test. This will be the only opportunity for a reassessment.

3.   Reteach sessions will include reading and taking notes on the same material in a different textbook (Winks) as well as one-on-one tutoring by Mrs. Ainsworth or Mr. Herner. Students will be expected to bring completed activities and notes on the original assignment on the day of the reassessment. All notes must be handwritten.

4.   Unit tests will not be reassessed.
