Bio:
Italian language teacher and native Coloradan Maria Foderaro-Guertin
comes to B-CC in the fall of 2005 with experience teaching
at every grade level. Ms. Foderaro-Guertin, whose parents
emigrated from Italy and still live in Pueblo, Colo., taught
Italian and French at a Colorado high school before moving
to Maryland and teaching Spanish, social studies and science
at a Baltimore-area Catholic elementary and middle school.
After two jobs working on aid and development issues for
African countries and a position at a telecommunications
company, Ms. Foderaro-Guertin returned to teaching. She
worked as a foreign language exploratory teacher at Hyattsville
Middle School before moving a year ago to Parkland Middle
School here in Montgomery County, where she taught Italian
and French.
Ms. Foderaro-Guertin earned her undergraduate degree in
social science with a minor in Italian and French with a
teaching certificate from the University of Southern Colorado
(now Colorado State University -- Pueblo) before obtaining
two Master's degrees: one from Middlebury College in Italian
Language and Literature and the other from American University
in Comparative and Regional Studies-Africa with a secondary
specialization in International Development. The program
at Middlebury included an academic year living in Florence,
Italy, with coursework at the University of Florence.
Ms. Foderaro-Guertin, the oldest of five children, loves
to cook for friends, attend Italian cultural events and
fix up the house she and her husband recently purchased.
Asked why she looks forward to teaching at B-CC, she replied,
"I absolutely love the idea of speaking Italian almost all
day!"
