Bio: Marshall White, Music Department chairman and Arts Resource teacher (department chair), has been director of bands, orchestra, pit orchestra, and jazz ensemble at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School since 1996. In addition, Mr. White teaches music theory, music history, and composition for the International Baccalaureate program and has taught piano and guitar classes at B-CC.

Mr. White studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Mr. White also graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Towson University and a Master of Music Degree in Performance from the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University of America. Additionally, he has done course work towards a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree at Catholic University.

Under Mr. White's direction, the performing groups at B-CC have consistently achieved superior and excellent ratings at local, state, and national festivals. In April 2004, the GRAMMY Recording Foundation named B-CC HS a GRAMMY signature school for its musical excellence, one of 41 public schools so recognized in the US. During the spring 2004 music festival in New Orleans, the ensembles earned superior ratings; the jazz band was voted "judges' choice" and the orchestra was named outstanding orchestra group at the festival and asked to play next year at an invitation-only festival in Boston.

In March 2002, the orchestra was invited to perform at the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-State Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. In October 2001, the Orchestra performed at the MMEA Fall In-Service Conference as the reading orchestra for newly published works. Also, in the May 2003 issue of the Music Educators Journal, the B-CC Double String Quartet was highlighted for performing at the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) FAME (Fund for the Advancement of Music Education) dinner.

An avid listener of all types of music, Mr. White has commissioned works by local composers for both the Symphonic Band and Orchestra. He also has commissioned special arrangements adapted for the Jazz Ensemble.

Mr. White is in demand as a freelance trumpet player, private teacher, and piano player in the Baltimore/Washington area. Besides frequent appearances in various bands and orchestras, he also performs with the Potomac Brass Quintet. In addition, Mr. White has had the distinct honor of performing for Pope John Paul II in the Vatican as the Principal Trumpet and soloist in the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra. Mr. White performs with the Young Victorian Theatre Orchestra in Baltimore and, since 1993, Mr. White has been the Principal Trumpet for the Summer Opera Theatre Company in Washington.

Mr. White also enjoys travel, racquet sports, and spending time at home with his wife, son, and two stepsons.
