Bio: Marshall White, Music Department chairman
and Arts Resource teacher (department chair), has been director
of bands, orchestra, pit orchestra, and jazz ensemble at
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School since 1996. In addition,
Mr. White teaches music theory, music history, and composition
for the International Baccalaureate program and has taught
piano and guitar classes at B-CC.
Mr. White studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and
graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree
in Music Performance from the University of Maryland, Baltimore
County. Mr. White also graduated summa cum laude with a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Towson
University and a Master of Music Degree in Performance from
the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University
of America. Additionally, he has done course work towards
a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree at Catholic University.
Under Mr. White's direction, the performing groups at B-CC
have consistently achieved superior and excellent ratings
at local, state, and national festivals. In April 2004,
the GRAMMY Recording Foundation named B-CC HS a GRAMMY signature
school for its musical excellence, one of 41 public schools
so recognized in the US. During the spring 2004 music festival
in New Orleans, the ensembles earned superior ratings; the
jazz band was voted "judges' choice" and the orchestra
was named outstanding orchestra group at the festival and
asked to play next year at an invitation-only festival in
Boston.
In March 2002, the orchestra was invited to perform at
the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-State
Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. In October
2001, the Orchestra performed at the MMEA Fall In-Service
Conference as the reading orchestra for newly published
works. Also, in the May 2003 issue of the Music Educators
Journal, the B-CC Double String Quartet was highlighted
for performing at the Music Educators National Conference
(MENC) FAME (Fund for the Advancement of Music Education)
dinner.
An avid listener of all types of music, Mr. White has
commissioned works by local composers for both the Symphonic
Band and Orchestra. He also has commissioned special arrangements
adapted for the Jazz Ensemble.
Mr. White is in demand as a freelance trumpet player, private
teacher, and piano player in the Baltimore/Washington area.
Besides frequent appearances in various bands and orchestras,
he also performs with the Potomac Brass Quintet. In addition,
Mr. White has had the distinct honor of performing for Pope
John Paul II in the Vatican as the Principal Trumpet and
soloist in the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra. Mr.
White performs with the Young Victorian Theatre Orchestra
in Baltimore and, since 1993, Mr. White has been the Principal
Trumpet for the Summer Opera Theatre Company in Washington.
Mr. White also enjoys travel, racquet sports, and spending
time at home with his wife, son, and two stepsons.
