Summer Assignment

2008

This summer assignment is mandatory and also posted on the B-CC IB web site. This WILL be part of your first quarter grade. The attached rubric WILL be used to assess your journal. Read the rubric carefully as these objectives will be used to score your journals.

SENIORS

Take the time to explore the area of focus that you have chosen. Seek out art exhibits that would fit with your chosen area.

Do sketches, paintings, drawings, and other projects inspired by the work you see on gallery visits and by your reading and research. Experiment with different materials to help you get a good start in the fall.

Take a class that will enhance your work, such as painting or life drawing, etc.  Remember, you may use work in your final exhibit to demonstrate growth in your focus.

Read the assignment below carefully. This applies to you, but with your focus in mind.

Do a series of 3 pieces of art in your area of focus. They can be as small as 8 ½” x 11”, but they need to be completed works.

JUNIORS and SENIORS

The following should be completed in a journal that is at least 8 ½ x 11”, hard bound preferred. Do not skip pages. Use both sides of the page, and be sure to credit your sources.

  1. Find at least 3 art exhibits, art openings or shows to visit during the summer, either locally (D.C., Baltimore, Northern Virginia), or wherever you find yourself this summer.
4 Who are the artists that influence you?
4 Show examples, photos, clippings or copies of their work.
4 How has the work inspired you?
4 What can you learn from these artists? – Explain.

  2. Include several sketches, paintings, drawings or mixed media of your own work in your journal. These should exemplify the influences of the other artists on your work.

  3. Choose at least three art media or materials that you are not familiar with, and use them in your journal (colored inks, oil sticks, linoleum prints.)
4 Experiment with these materials, be expressive.
4 Try different ideas; discuss your successes and your failures.
4 Discuss how a mistake, or an apparent failure, can actually lead the way to success.

  4. Include any artistic or aesthetic experiences that you take part in, or observe, during the summer. Plays, operas, musicals, concerts, ballets or other cultural events may have an impact your work.
