IB English 11 Summer Reading Journal 2008

Students entering the 11th grade IB English class for the 2008-2009 school year are required to complete a reading journal for the assigned summer reading texts. This journal is due when students return to school in the fall. Journal guidelines and the requirements are provided below. These are specific writing/reflection requirements that complement the reading assignments for these classes. Please follow them.

Required Texts for IB 11 Summer Reading

All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy*
Siddhartha, Herman Hesse*

If possible, try to secure your own copies of these works. It will be helpful to have personal copies, as you can then annotate them freely. Annotate both texts as you read by underlining, writing notes in the margins, or using post-it notes. Annotations are not limited to the summer reading journal assignments! Identify aspects of the works that speak to you. The books that are asterisked (*) are available through the English Department.

  • Type your entries. Please type each entry on a separate sheet of paper and double space your response.

  • Do not attempt to complete your assignment the night before school starts! Plan ahead!

  • Read the specific assignments closely. They are listed on the back of this handout. If you lose your handout, the assignment can be found on the B-CC web page under the English Department page and the IB page as a link to the “Summer Reading Assignment for IB 11.”

  • REMEMBER! You must complete the assigned tasks for BOTH of the novels!

  • Do the entries when it seems most fitting, but do not forget to enjoy the stories as well -- this assignment should enhance your interaction with the texts, not replace your reading of them.

  • Close readings of both texts and the thoughtful completion of the summer reading journal assignments are very important to your success in IB English 11. A comprehensive selected response test over both novels will be given at the end of the first week of school. Additionally, journals will be collected, and you will write a comparative essay based on the summer readings.

We look forward to working with you in the fall – see you then!

The Specific Assignments TO BE COMPLETED FOR EACH NOVEL include:

  1. Keep a running list of quotations that seem significant or of particular literary merit. Make sure you include the page number for each quotation. (4 quotations minimum). Choose one of your quotations and write a BCR explaining how the quotation contributes to your understanding of the novel.

  2. Identify and explain the use of one literary device/technique used by the author of each book. For example, does the author use figurative language? If so, identify the specific type of figurative language being used and how it contributes to the overall effect of the novel. Remember to include page numbers and include SPECIFIC examples!

Assignment TO BE COMPLETED Comparing the TWO NOVELS:

  1. Complete a brainstorm of ways in which All the Pretty Horses and Siddhartha could be written about in a comparative essay. Look for parallel structures, similar characters, literary techniques or unique features the novels have in common, etc. Come up with at least FIVE ideas. Choose one and write a BCR explaining in more depth how you could develop this idea into a full-length essay of 1,000 to 1,500 words.

NOTE

BCR responses should be 5 - 7 sentences in length and should include the page number of the passage.

There will be 5 entries total in your completed journal.
