Theory of Knowledge 1—Assignments and Questions to Consider
for the Summer of 2007

Required Text:

Selections from The World is Flat – Friedman
(Chapter 2 and Chapter 13)

Assignments and Questions

Questions to think about in preparation for the first day of ToK 1:

  1. What do you know?
  2. How do you know it?
  3. Why do you trust that you know it?
  4. What are the obstacles to your knowledge?

Complete the following reading and writing assignments in connection with the required IB cross-curricular summer reading of Friedman’s The World Is Flat. We are expecting your journal responses to provide the kinds of information and examples you need to participate in first-week discussions.

The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman
Summer Reading Questions for Theory of Knowledge

We will be discussing the assigned readings in class, and, in ToK fashion, asking how Friedman knows what he says he knows and whether his claims rise to the level of truth. Based upon your reading of “The Ten Flatteners” and “ Globalization of the Local,” respond to each of the following questions:

  1. What assumptions underlie Friedman’s claims regarding the “ten flatteners” and his vision of the forces that are shaping our future? Are there factors he has omitted from his equation?
  2. Reflect on the title of Friedman's text with its figurative and ironic associations. How did your interpretation of the title influence your reading of Friedman's argument?
  3. What is the nature of the evidence he brings to his argument? What are the strengths and weaknesses of his evidence?
  4. What assumptions are challenged by Friedman’s views? How does he question the notion of “first” and “third” worlds?
  5. What are his views about the effects of globalization on cultures? Do you agree with his formulation? Why or why not?
  6. What ethical considerations arise from Friedman’s claims?
  7. How has your reading challenged or supported your assumptions – about technology, economic and historical forces, the nature of progress, culture and national identity, anything?

Maximum length: No more than 750 words for all questions together.
