B-CC's Children's Show Returns Home, Like "Iris," November 5-7
Children and their parents are invited to see B-CC High School's second production of the 2009-2010 season, Still Life with Iris, November 5-7 at 7:00 p.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 7th. The one-act play, written by award-winning writer, Steven Dietz, is a fantastical adventure which centers on a little girl's quest to reclaim her past and find her home.
B-CC Junior, Caroline Borders, is directing the show, which focuses on Iris who lives with her mom in the land of Nocturno, a magical place in which the workers make by night all of the things we see in the world by day. The rulers of Nocturno, the Great Goods, are determined to have the best of everything on their island and, therefore, take Iris away from her home. To ease the pain of this separation, they remove her PastCoat leaving her with no memory of her home or her family. However, one thing does remain: a single button from her coat. With this button, Iris is joined by two friends as she begins her journey.
"This has been a phenomenal experience. Every rehearsal, I work through the scenes with the actors, my peers, and together we follow Iris as she finds her way home,” Borders says. “I love the play so much because it embodies the belief that all you need in life are the people who love you and a place to call home. It’s a message I know my audience will embrace and celebrate.”
From 1998 to 2006, the Children's Show was a regular part of the B-CC Theater season. This year, the show returns as another production opportunity for B-CC student actors and a significant directing opportunity for Borders, who was selected by B-CC's Theater and Media Arts teachers following the student-directed One-Act Play competition in the spring. The One-Act Plays are directed by IB Theater students every spring as part of the IB Theater Diploma program. In 2010, a different student director will be selected to direct the 2010 B-CC Children's Show in the fall.
"We are excited to bring back this fantastic opportunity that encourages B-CC’s Theater students to do what they do best: create, direct, act and produce,” states Aaron Taylor, B-CC English teacher and Director of B-CC’s annual mainstage productions. “The show is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages.”
General seating tickets will be sold in advance and at the door before each performance. Ticket prices are $5.00. For more information, go to www.bcctheater.com.
