Club FunctionThe Black Student
Association (BSA) is an organization in which African American students can show
their leadership qualities and partake in community service activities. We
promote academic excellence and achievements among African-American students. In
addition to promoting higher performance in the classroom, we offer an
environment where students can learn about the social and political issues, such
as Affirmative Action, disproportionate rates of AIDS victims, economic
disparities, and others, that are affecting the African-American community. The
organization also provides a place where students can interact and come together
to embrace African-American culture and discuss issues of concern. As a group,
the BSA feels that the best way to reach out and connect with the African
American community is through community service. The activities this year
include monthly drives (clothing, canned food, coat, etc.); monthly visits to
soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, and hospitals; a voter
registraton drive/speaker; presentation for Black History month; joint
activities with BSAs from other county schools; and a "grand finale" community
service project in a city outside of our own.
