| Braille
Awareness Club 2007-2008 |
| Club Function:
The Braille Awareness Club was formed last year. Its
mission is to teach Braille Literacy through the arts,
and art through Braille Literacy. The group practices
Braille through unique forms of the arts, including
weaving on the patented Mayster Braille Loom, invented
by Jennifer Mayster. If desired, outside the school,
the group will help the Blind in our area learn Braille.
With a shortage of Braille instructors, only 9% of the
Blind are graduating high school knowing how to read
and write. In prior years many area high school students
have helped the Blind Faith School of Music and Art
on Saturdays. Many high school students also wrote beautiful
college essays on the experience. Community service
hours are awarded. This year club members will be working
on the Hadley School for the Blind curriculum on learning
Braille for the sighted, and helping B-CC blind grandparents
learn Braille and make a Braille rolodex of needed phone
numbers. We will learn Braille through the art of weaving
on the Mayster Braille Loom and host a Celebration of
Textiles the first weekend of June at the Textile Museum
in Dupont Circle. Hope to have new students join our
group at our first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at
11:00am. |
