Meet Information:
There are five meets a year, plus finals. If you are a new
debater, you can observe on certain dates instead of actually
debating to get a better feel of how to debate. For the
meet, dress nicely. This does not mean a suit, but a dress
or khakis would be good. It is always nice to impress the
judge. Shake his/her hand when you come in. Have eye contact
with the judge while debating, and do not rush. You will
have three minutes of preparation time to take whenever
needed, and you can split it up, i.e. one minute before
cross ex, two before rebuttal, or however you please. When
you are at the debate, there will be two flights (rounds)
per side, for a total of four flights. They post your number,
which is the same as last time, with new debaters having
a new number. You look at your number and find which argument
you are debating and which room it is in, along with the
flight. Flight A means you go right away, and Flight B means
you go after somebody else is done, so get there after about
20 minutes to be safe. You do this for each side. They post
the first set and then the second set later.
Constructing Your Arguments:
Each debater must write both the affirmative and negative
sides of the topic. The debate should include the topic,
definitions, a core value, and around three contentions
(arguments). Use as much research as possible. If you want
more detailed information, attend meetings for assistance
and a sample debate. The format for the debate is as follows:
1. Affirmative Constructive (6 minutes)
2. Negative Cross-Examination (3 minutes)
3. Negative Constructive (7 minutes)
4. Affirmative Cross-Examination (3 minutes)
5. Affirmative Rebuttal (4 minutes)
6. Negative Rebuttal (6 minutes)
7. Affirmative Rebuttal (3 minutes)
