International Night was held on March 15, 2003
in the school cafeteria. More than 500 guests
enjoyed a variety of delicious foods from around
the world. They were entertained by a dazzling
fashion show. Students modeled a variety of
traditional outfits. Some of the clothing would
be worn to work or to the marketplace. Others,
far more elaborate, would be worn on special
occasions such as weddings or funerals. Twenty
different groups presented cultural dances from
Europe, Central America, South America, Asia,
and Africa. Three of the presenters wrote and
recited original poetry about their homelands.
The final presenter was Azadeh Pourzand, a senior
from Iran. She spoke movingly about her experience
as an international student and as a member
of the International Club at B-CC. She and her
mother were forced to flee Iran when her father,
a journalist, was imprisoned. Students and faculty
at B-CC offered her support and friendship.
The members of the International Club are extremely
grateful for the help and the support they received
from the members of the PTSA. They were overwhelmed
by the offers of food, help with the decorating,
and by the interest displayed by families other
than their own. They would particularly like
to thank Joyce Gwadz, Al and Cathie, Jil Sneider,
Jenny Elliot, Nancy Wolfe, Sandra Ostrach, and
Mr. And Mrs. Luis Vallejo.

Reflections
By Azi Pourzand '03
The travelers were tired of walking in the
desert with an infinite sky above it. It seemed
that the sparkling stars were celebrating
an event. Maybe it was the coronation of the
sun or the fullness of the moon. The travelers
were tired. They stopped and pulled up their
tent right beneath the sky. They started a
fire and sat around it.
Their shadows appeared on the tent. The shadows
grew taller and taller till they touched the
silky sky.
And touching the silky sky was what these
travelers could never have imagined.
The travelers are us-the members of the B-CC
International Club.
Our tent is B-CC.
Our fire is friendship, peace and love.
Our shadow will grow taller and taller till
we can touch the silky sky of our dreams.
Our dream is universal peace and love.
Our dream is to be human and only human.
We, the members of the B-CC International
Club, believe that having different skin color
gives us our power. We, in fact, worship colors.
We believe in diversity. We believe in ourselves.
Let us, the young believers of unity pray
for the day that all the people of the world
could live next to each other as peacefully
as the colors of the rainbow do!
And as peacefully as the students of B-CC
do. |
