Oct. 14, Gazette: Whitman girls lead talented tennis field
After shocking the county — and itself — by dropping down to Division II in 2006, perennial girls tennis power Whitman has spent the last three years clawing its way back to the top.
The Vikings (12-0) are officially back in 2008. They clinched their first Division I title in six years with a 4-3 win over defending county champion Churchill on Oct. 2. But the season isn't over, and they're not satisfied yet.
Whitman intends to back up its division title at the county tournament, Oct. 20-23. The tournament's first two rounds will be played at various sites around the county; Wednesday and Thursday's semifinal and final rounds are slated for 3:30 p.m. at Blake. ... In such a tennis-rich county, a plethora of other teams are eager and capable of pulling off upsets, including Bethesda-Chevy Chase (7-5), Blair (6-6) and Division II champion Richard Montgomery (10-1).
Match reports:
Oct. 10: Wootton 6, B-CC 1
The B-CC girls varsity tennis team ended its season last week with a solid record, winning seven matches, dropping five, and ranking number four in the division.
After beginning the season with *SIX CONSECUTIVE WINS*, it seemed as though the Lady Barons just couldn't lose. But the last few matches told a different story as the girls went up against the toughest teams in their division.
The last matchup of the regular season against Wootton was another tough one. The Barons put up a great fight and forced their Wootton rivals into close points and several tie-breakers. Still, despite great effort and sportsmanship, B-CC came up short. The only win for B-CC was brought home by doubles duo Cameron Kelly and Madison Yeutter, who overcame Wootton 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Ellie Magner and partner Kayla Hanley came close at 6-7, 3-6.
The B-CC girls varsity tennis team wants to thank Coach Maigan Campbell for taking over at the eleventh hour. Coach Campbell's infectious enthusiasm motivated the girls, who derived greater confidence through her emphasis on the "inner game" – the right attitude for winning and having fun.
* "As a coach I tried to instill a great positive morale, confidence, and teamwork. This sport is extremely mental, and if you are going to be weak mentally, then you will not succeed physically. I have a young, strong, full-of-potential-group, and I'm definitely looking forward to next year! This has been the greatest coaching experience I have ever had." *
*The girls varsity tennis team would also like to thank Debbie Newman for her great work as team manager.*
