B-CC PTSA Meeting Minutes

November 18, 2003

Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, PTSA Meeting, held in the Choral Room at Bethesda Chevy Chase.

At 7:32 p.m. the president, Paula Ott, called the meeting to order.  Minutes, as posted on BCC-Net, were approved.

Those in attendance were: Katy Harvey, Paula Ott, Debbie Lyle, San Dee Ostrach, Diane Horn, Barbara Levine, Donald Bowie, Merrell Tuck-Primdahl, Juliana Taymans Malouf, Desiree Magney, Joy Belluzzi, Robin Lawson, Pam Feinstine, Nancy Wolfe, Ellen Gerecht, Barbara Llewellyn, Joyce Sosak, Amy Ross, Margaret Oni, Debra Lyle, Debby Friedman, Cindy Gray, Par Oxley Young & Chantel Greene.

Budget Report:  Paula Ott reported that PTSA had received an additional $595 in dues, $685 in contributions, $800 in Giant monies, and $600 in Brick purchase money.  We paid out $1,349 in expenses (PTSA state and national dues pass through), $12,000 to BCC to aid with student agenda costs, and $400 for staff appreciation.  All grand piano funds which the PTSA had been holding for BCC has been put into a school account.

Linkages to Learning Report:  Diane Horn reported that the Coat Drive was running through December 6th.  Desiree Magney reported on the Gift Drive and Drop a Dollar Friday (student fundraiser held at BCC.)  Linkages has received money from Dave & Busters; however, they still need toys and gifts for children ages 1 to 18.

Principal’s Report:  Katy Harvey reported that BBC seniors are busy preparing their college applications.  There is free math tutoring every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school.  The tutoring room is always full. Report cards just went out, and the school spent extra time looking at freshmen grades.  Honors Geometry is especially tough for freshmen.  If parents have concerns, they should email the teacher.

Right now BCC is looking for funding sources for additional teacher training.  Katy has asked the Foundation if they have resources to help pay for teacher training.  A Q & A session followed.

Guest Speaker: Winnie Mitchell Fable gave a presentation on Drug and Alcohol Abuse (Power Point presentation is available at the BCC PTSA website.)

Book Fair:  Barbara Levine (and a host of dedicated volunteers) has been sorting books for the upcoming (Feb 1st) BCC Used Book Fair.  There’s still time to donate books.  If you know of someone who has books but cannot drop them by BCC, we’ll pick them up.

Giant:  Pam Feinstein reported that our Giant fundraisers are about where they were last year.  Please register your Giant Bonus Card if you have not already done so.

CIP:  Carol Brand noted that Maryland Governor is offering Montgomery County only 3 million dollars in capital improvement funds, so we need to write to our representatives, the Governor, in protest.

Cluster Report:  Nancy Wolfe reported that the Cluster Report will be posted on BCC-Net.  There is a cluster meeting tomorrow (Nov. 19) regarding the No Child Left Behind legislation and MCPS Grading Policy Changes.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Chantel Greene, Secretary
