How do I find more specific
information about course offerings, academic calendar, sports
teams, music program, drama program, and more?
We encourage you to explore the website, where you will
find all of this information, and answers to many additional
questions, as well as contact information for school offices
and departments, and PTSA Officers, who are available
to help you! http://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/bcchs
What
should my child expect freshman year?
Go to the BCC Freshman Survival Guide at http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/bcchs/quicklinks/freshman.parentguide.pdf
Copies of the Freshman Survival Guide are also available
in the main office.
The school is so big. How
will my child find his/her way around?
In August there will be a half-day orientation for all new
students, where they will experience a “practice day.”
There is also an informational evening in late August for
parents of new students. You will receive notification
of these events in the mail this summer.
Are there events I can
attend with my child at B-CC?

How do I find out what
is happening at school?
Join the B-CC families’
email network, which is open to B-CC and Westland families.
Please identify yourself, your child(ren), and the grade(s)
in your request. Read the bi-monthly PTSA newsletter, the
Banter,
which is mailed to all parents. Look for letters
from the principal. Regularly check out the website.
When may I join the PTSA
(Parent-Teacher-Student Association)?
Any time! Go to the PTSA
link on the website where you can download a membership
form, get to know what PTSA does at B-CC, and see what
volunteer activities and leadership opportunities are available
to you. We encourage all families to join and VOLUNTEER
with the PTSA; it is B-CC’s vitally important parent
resource. You don’t have to wait until next fall to
join, volunteer, and get to know B-CC!
Is there grade level
information and support for parents?
YES! There are Parent
Peer Groups for each grade level, with parent leaders
available to help you. The PTSA
sponsors meetings throughout the year on topics relevant
to the parent body in general and to parents of specific
grades. There is a 9th grade welcome meeting in late October
each year to answer ALL of your questions! The
International Connections Committee and the Welcoming
Committe are also important resource for parents who
are new to MCPS.
My child wants to try
out for a fall sport. When do tryouts start?
You will need to be in town when tryouts begin, in the middle
of August. Check the website's
Athletics page for a listing of each season's sports
with info about fall tryouts, starting mid-August. Please
note that sports practices are held daily for approximately
two hours after school.
Are there any clubs or
arts organizations?
B-CC students are involved in about 80 clubsclubs (a list
of extra-curricular activities is on the website). Most
meet during lunchtime. There is a club fair early in the
school year to introduce new students to these activities.
There are also extensive arts programs, with opportunities
to participate in Music, Theater and Arts performances and
shows.
Is
there an organized program for academic support of students?
TAP, (Time for Academic
Progress) funded by the B-CC
HS Educational Foundation
,
provides after school help by teachers, in the major disciplines
three days per week. NHS students also provide tutoring
in all subjects, during lunch.
What are the school hours?
B-CC HS begins at 7:25 a.m. and ends at 2:10 p.m. There
are seven class periods each day. |
