"Lights, Community, Action!"
BCMS
is hosting a school-wide campaign "to Call People to Action in Energy Conservation".
If every household in America
converted just one light bulb to an Energy Star-rated bulb, it would be
the equivilent of removing 750,000 cars from the road. Energy Star-rated
CFL bulbs last longer and use up to 75% less electricity to operate.
Students
will invite their parents, family members, friends and neigbors to purchase
an environmentally friendly light bulb and install it right
away. They can convert as many bulbs as they would like. Previously purchased bulbs will not count in the contest. We are measuring the
effectiveness of our word of mouth campaign.
Once people have installed their new bulbs, they will visit the link and "Take the Pledge" at the Energy Star site. Taking the pledge is for adults only. They will be asked to indicate their first name, their email address, and their zip code and indicate how many bulbs they converted.
If a parent has students in multiple grades, they will need to convert at least one bulb per child in order to register at each grade level's site. We are counting the total number of bulbs converted and we wouldn't want to count one bulb twice. The website will indicate the amount of greenhouse gas that was prevented from going into the air, the number of bulbs converted, and how much electricity was saved in the process.

Kudos
to Patsy Darden,
Earl Hoffman, and Paulette Pumphrey who
were recognized by the Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, Maryland
on September 19, 2007 for their work in organizing a basketball tournament
/ fundraiser to benefit clients of Stepping Stones.
Students, under the direction of the above named teachers, organized the fundraiser,
collected monies and then shopped for items needed by
those
in transition
from shelters to their own homes.
