SECOND GRADE NEWS

We are working hard this November!

Math

We are working on unit two which includes: identifying plane shapes, naming attributes of the shapes, identifying the lines of symmetry, finding congruent shapes, and naming geometric solids. Later in the unit we will also introduce regrouping.

Reading /Language Arts:

We are continuing to work on the sound of long e in spelling. We are working on identifying text features in nonfiction texts. Gail Gibbons is the author we are focusing on throughout November. She is the author of many non-fiction books. We are still working on story structure, which includes the characters, setting, problem and solution. We have been focusing on cause and effect and how the setting affects the characters and the events.

Writer's workshop:

We are finishing our personal narratives, and we'll begin writing to inform.

Science:

We are finishing our unit on Balancing and Weighing. Our final experiment is a culminating activity which requires the students to apply the strategies they have learned in this unit to discover which of the five sealed canisters contains six marbles.

Social Studies:

We have been learning about the difference between rules and laws in a democracy. We have also discussed the characteristics of a leader and how one is chosen. We will begin our study of the Wampanoag Native Americans and the Pilgrims.

On November 18, 2009, we will be eating lunch at 10:30 which is prior to our departure to Strathmore Concert Hall. Our scheduled return time is 2:00. The children will be able to purchase their lunch in the cafeteria that day.

Please continue to monitor your child's assignment book and homework folder daily. As our first quarter has just ended, you may want to check with your child about his/her supply of pencils, erasers, glue sticks, and crayons. We look forward to seeing everyone at our November parent conferences !
