Welcome all second grade families! We are looking forward to the start of a new year. Here's what we have planned: Math: For our first unit we will be working with numeration and place value. We will also study how graphs communicate information. The children will be taking a pre-assessment before we begin unit one. It is important to review basic addition and subtraction facts at home. Reading: We are pleased that Mrs. Bergman, our reading initiative teacher, will be working with second grade again this year. Our reading 3D assessment window begins September 8. We will review the before, during, and after reading strategies your child learned last year. We will focus on story structure, (characters, setting, problem, and solution). Your child will be asked to make connections with the story characters. During the month of September the children will be given spelling inventories. We will also focus on handwriting. This marking period we will be writing personal narratives as well. Science: Our first unit is balancing and weighing. Your child will be using several manipulatives to explore how things balance. For our culminating activity your child will be asked to make a mobile in class. Social Studies: We will begin our study with "Where in the world is Olney/Rockville?" This activity introduces your child to using map skills. We will also focus on how rules promote personal responsibility and help the whole society. These activities are part of our unit one "Political Systems in Action". Your child will bring home his/her assignment book and homework folder on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Please be sure to check the homework folder and initial the assignment book each night. We look forward to meeting our students' parents at our BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. The Second Grade Team
