Angela's Ashes

Frank McCourt

***** Great! I would recommend it to my friends.
Frank McCourt's memoir deals with his rough past, growing up in Limerick, Ireland. With a mother from Limerick and a father from the north, Frank is often picked on for being different. After his dad leaves to England for work, Frank must step up to become a father figure to his siblings, and when his dad does not send money, must support the family. This memoir deals with the true hardships many people faced and is inspiring and moving. Although this book is a little depressing, I would recommend it to anyone who likes memoirs, as this is an excellent one. |

A Long Way Home

Ishmael Beah

***** I would recommend it to my friends!
This moving book is a memoir that focuses on the harsh reality of child soldiers. Ishmael Beah writes of his experiences in Sierre Leon during the time of a civil war. After loosing everything in his life, he turns to one thing that he believes will make him feel better: revenge. Taken in by the Sierre Leon army to defeat the rebels, Beah describes the tragedies he suffered and his rehabilitation process to become a normal human again. After reading this book I was astonished at the real horrific events that take place each day. It made me more grateful for everything I have, and has also motivated me to make a difference and help people who have lost their childhood after becoming a child soldier.

Overachievers is a documentary style book written by Alexandra Robbins. This nonfiction book chronicles the lives of several overachieving high school students. As they prepare for college, Robbins interviews them on what drives them to achieve their high marks and their successes. The chapters are short, but informative. Also, the author interviewed teens from Walt Whitman High School which made it even more interesting. She even went there herself! |

In Cold Blood

Truman Capote

***** Great! I would recommend it to my friends.
When I first picked up the book, I thought it would be very similar to the movie, Capote, and was a little turned off to it. However, when I started reading it, I was captivated by Capote's wonderful writing skills. The book is about the slaying of a family and the town's reaction to this tragedy, and the search for the killers. Capote did a wonderful job of capturing one of the killer's, Perry Smith's, emotions and actions. Capote's imagery was great as well. I truely enjoyed this book, even though I usually do not like books with grim subjects, and recommend it to anyone who wants a good read. |
