Metro Swim and Dive Championships

Titans Compete in Prestigious Championship

Senior Michael Bowrin represented Einstein High School well in the morning preliminary heats of the 43rd Annual Metro Swim and Dive Championship, one of the fastest high school meets on the East Coast that includes private, parochial and public schools. Bowrin lowered his best time another .03 seconds to place 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle event and qualify as second alternate for the evening finals.
In his 100-yard freestyle event, Bowrin did not fare as well, adding time to his preliminary seed time.
The boys 200-yard freestyle relay comprised of Bowrin, senior Nate Schrier, junior Glenn Pastel and sophomore Sam Kaiser also lowered their best seed time by .85 seconds, finishing in 26th place.
The Metro Team Combined trophy went to Winston Churchill High School. Georgetown Prep took the boys team prize, and the Churchill girls defeated a strong Good Counsel team to earn their first girls team championship.
Overall, the MCPS teams were solid, and the combined team top 20 place finished included Churchill (1), Walter Johnson (3), Walt Whitman (5), Sherwood (7), Northwest (11), Wootton (13), Blair (15), Quince Orchard (17), Richard Montgomery (18), B-CC (19), and Blake (20).
Four records fell at the finals competition. Georgetown Prep's Brady Fox broke his own 100-yard butterfly record, Bishop O'Connell's Michael Flach smashed the 500-yard freestyle event, Gonzaga took the 400-yard freestyle relay, and Poolesville junior Cara Chuang broke her own 100-yard backstroke record.

County Swim Championships at MLK Swim Center

Titan Boys Carry the Team

The Montgomery County High School Swim Championship is a showcase for some of the best young talent on the East Coast, and on Feb. 14, Titan swimmers entered the pool with stars nurtured by established swim clubs, including RMSC, CurlBurke, Hydrosonic Tiburones, AquaHoya, Sea Devils, Joe Flaherty Dolphins and Flying Gull.
No records were broken at the meet, but a dynasty ended as Winston Churchill High School topped long-dominant Walter Johnson as the undefeated county swim champions.
The Titan boys netted 21 points through a series of events to place 17th in the county. The girls struggled, unable to achieve any top 16 finishes, producing no points throughout the meet.
Highlights of the daylong event include:
*Senior Michael Bowrin captured an eighth-place finish in the 50-yard sprint freestyle, and lowered his personal best time in the event by .01 seconds. He qualified for the upcoming Metro championship on Feb. 21 in this event.
*Bowrin also dropped two seconds in his 100-yard freestyle event to post a time of 52.84, a 16th-place finish that was good enough to qualify for the Metro championship.
*The boys 200-yard freestyle relay team -- Bowrin, senior Nate Schrier, junior Glenn Pastel and sophomore Sam Kaiser -- qualified for the Metro championship with a 15th-place finish.
*Titan freshman Franklin Ruiz, who just began swimming this year, lowered his 100-yard freestyle time by two seconds.
*Schrier swam a personal best of 23.89 in the 50-yard sprint freestyle event, placing 12th overall and missing the Metro qualifying cut by .10 seconds.
*Standout swimmers at the meet included Olympic time qualifier Cara Chuang of Poolesville in the girls 100-yard backstroke. She blew out the field with a time of 55.96, while the Titans' best girl backstroker placed 28th.
*Einstein's former swim coach, Brendan Lees, now the swim coach at Sherwood High School, led his boys 4 x 100 relay team to a first place finish over Churchill and Walter Johnson.
The upcoming Metro championship on Feb. 21 will have public and private schools going head to head in the pool. Bowrin is entered in the 50-and 100-yard freestyle individual events. The Titan boys 200-yard freestyle relay team also is entered.

Coach Raleigh Jaynes-Culver put her best 50-yard freestylers into the relay at the championships to stun the other five teams with a third-place finish and secure a Metro qualifying time.
Initial meet entries had the Titan boys 200-yard freestyle relay seeded last. However, the quad of swimmers comprised of senior Nate Schrier, sophomore Sam Kaiser, junior Glenn Pastel and senior Michael Bowrin drew  a standing ovation for their performance from the team and their parents. Schrier attempted to secure a 50-yard Metro qualifying time by leading off, but missed the mark by .72 seconds.
Bowrin lowered his best time by .01 in the individual 50-yard freestyle event, and brought home a first place finish for the Titans. He finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Bowrin has two more chances to break the school record in the 50-yard freestyle event at the upcoming county championships and the final Metro meet.
Schrier finished third in the 50-yard freestyle event and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke race. Pastel had an eighth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard breastroke. Freshman Zeke Gonzales lowered his 500-yard freestyle time by four seconds and finished seventh.

County Championship weekend begins on Thurs., Feb. 12 at the MLK Aquatic Center with the 500-yard freestyle events, diving on Fri., Feb. 13 and swim events on Sat., Feb. 14.
Metro (Washington Metropolitan Swimming and Diving) holds a championship that pits the best of private and public schools for a USS-sanctioned meet from Feb. 21 to Feb. 23.

Einstein vs Northwest

Titans Can't Keep Up With Jaguars

The Titan swim team couldn't challenge Division III leader Northwest Saturday at the Montgomery College Takoma Park pool. The big Jaguar team had the maximum number of swimmers allowed for each event, while the Titans fielded one or two swimmers in an event, automatically dropping behind in point totals. The combined team score had Northwest racking up 253 points to Einstein's 81. In the girls division, Titan swimmers compiled 42 points to Northwest's 127. In the boys division, Einstein boys had 39 points to Northwest's 126.
The meet opened with diving, and in the girls division, Titan senior Devon Rinkel finished second, and junior Phoebe McDermott finished third. The Jags scooped up a sweep for their boys diving team as the Titan boys did not compete.
In boys swimming events, senior Nate Schrier finished second in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Glenn Pastel claimed third place for the Titans in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Ryan Keating finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly event.
Sophomore Will Ferrin had the percussion section of the Titan spirit team keep tempo for him as he fought for the finish in the grueling 500-yard freestyle. Both teams were standing and cheering their swimmers on as they swam the last leg of the event's 20 pool lengths neck and neck. It came down to the times on the watches of the three lane timers -- Ferrin finished fourth, but his teammate freshman Zeke Gonzales placed third in the event. Gonzales also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle.
The girls 200-yard medley race opened with a second-place finish fielded by junior Stephanie Pratt (backstroke), freshman Jordan Coyne (breaststroke), sophomore Zoe Goozner (butterfly) and freshman Alicia Lamkin (freestyle). Pratt and Giblin added a second place finish (Pratt) and third place finish (Giblin) in the 100-yard backstroke.
Senior team leader Michael Bowrin continues to watch and cheer the team from the deck while he recovers from a shoulder injury. Bowrin hopes to return to swimming in the divisional championship on Feb. 7. Bowrin is currently ranked in the top 16 swimmers for the 50-yard freestyle, and is the only Titan swimmer to have a Metro time cut.
On Sat., Jan. 31, the Titans take on Magruder for an out-of-conference meet at Olney Indoor Aquatic Center at 11 a.m. Bring on the band!

Junior Meredith Giblin  owned the 200-yard freestyle competition, easily winning her race by 15 yards. Sophomore Zoe Goozner lowered her 100-yard butterfly time by two seconds to win her race. The strategy by Coach Raleigh Jaynes-Culver to place freshman Jordan Coyne in the 100-yard freestyle, instead of the 100-yard breaststroke netted another first-place finish.
The ladies placed first in the meet's opening 200-yard medley relay (Pratt, Coyne, Goozner and freshman Alicia Lamkin) and the closing 4 x 100 freestyle relay (junior Caroline Jackman, Giblin, senior Brenna Durkin and junior Phoebe McDermott). Senior Jessie Wolfe placed first in the diving competition.
In boys events, senior Michael Bowrin was injured and unable to compete in his top event, the 50-yard freestyle. But fellow senior Nate Schrier stepped up and won the event for the Titans. Schrier also placed first in men's diving.

Strong third-place finishes came from freshman Zeke Gonzales in the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Ryan Keating in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, and sophomore Sam Kaiser in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Einstein's men swimmers made a strong showing despite the fact that the county jazz band competition thinned the ranks of their team.
