Hello! My name is Deanna Tucceri and I am a second grade teacher at Fields Road Elementary School. I am a third year teacher. I began my teaching career with Fifth grade and then moved into second grade. I have been teaching second grade for two years. I received my teaching degree from Mount Union College in Ohio and am currently enrolled in John Hopkins University getting my masters in Technology in Education. When I first began teaching second grade, I felt completely overwhelmed. My largest concern was that I was going to have to instruct my students on the basic skills of reading. I found that my second graders did not so much need reading attention focused on their fluency but on their reading comprehension. The ability to understand what they have just read was where my students were struggling. Hopefully this website will help you work with your student on improving their reading comprehension. |

Course Description |
Many times reading is thought of as fluency or how well students can decode
words. But the students ability to comprehend or understand what they read is
also as important. Comprehension is considered a deep structure system that
allows readers to construct meaning as they read.
It is the reflective aspect of
the reader's own thinking that is vital in promoting critical thinking through
the application of the following comprehension strategies you will learn about
in this site. You will learn mainly about after reading strategies such as
making connections, determining author's purpose, and responding to reading
through discussions and writing.
