- 12th grader Maria Paredes has been selected as one of the 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) for the GMS Class of 2011 and is being recognized as a "Leader for America´s Future." Her strong leadership, community service and academic achievements contributed to her selection from a pool of over 23,000 students who applied to the program, the largest and most competitive group of candidates in the program´s history.

- Antonelli Institute High School Photography Contest
- Gaithersburg High School (GHS) senior Nene Diane won first place in the 2011 Antonelli Institute High School Photography Contest. Ms. Diane´s photo, interpreting the theme of "Seasons," was rated first in a group of photos submitted by students from 55 different high schools representing six states. Her photo will be available on the Antonelli Institute’s website: www.antonelli.edu. GHS 12th grader, Alex John Hrycak was also recognized with an Honorable Mention Award for his photo interpreting the same theme. The Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography, located in Erdenheim, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1938 in Philadelphia by internationally renowned photographer and artist Severo Antonelli.

- On Wednesday, March 23, over 900 students from MCPS attended the Young Professionals Conference at The Universities at Shady Grove. Students from Gaithersburg HS in the National Academy of Finance, National Academy of Technology, Education Program, and Entrepreneurship Program attended this conference and heard engaging presentations that inspired them to continue working hard toward their career pathways.

March 9, 2011 – Gaithersburg High School is pleased to announce that 10 students of Russian received medals as a result of their accomplishments in the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) 29th National Russian Essay Contest which was administered in November 2010. 12th graders Jimmy Nguyen won a gold medal and Nathan Hertzberg and Emmanuel Osemene won silver medals in the advanced level exams. 11th graders Trevor Davis and |
| Graham Evans won silver medals and Germaine Nicholas, Juan Martinez, Leah Pope, Nicole Camelo and Diana Fuentes won bronze medals in the intermediate level exams. A total of 14 students from the Honors Russian 3 and Honors Russian 4 classes taught by Ms. Alla Sonsev participated in the contest, a record breaking number. In addition to the above medal winners, 11th graders Kyla Hooks, Mark Jubert and Danielle Riley as well as 12th grader, Walter Somarriba received honorable mention in the intermediate level exam. Over 1200 pre-college students nationwide participated in the contest this year, each writing essays on the topic "Why Travel." Essays were read by a team of experienced judges, many of them native speakers of Russian.

March 7, 2011 -- The Carson Scholars Fund announced today that Gaithersburg High School 10th grader Alfredo Colina Iturralde has been named a 2011 Carson Scholars for the second consecutive year. Alfredo (pictured below with Gaithersburg High School Principal Dr.Christine Handy-Collins) is being recognized as a high achieving student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities. Alfredo carries a 3.90 GPA and among his volunteer activities he has been a Counselor in Training for the City of Gaithersburg, an assistant English teacher for ESOL parents at the MCPS Saturday |
| School and a volunteer in the Montgomery County Public Library Summer Reading Program. Alfredo will receive a $1,000 college scholarship award and the coveted honor of being named a Carson Scholar. In addition to the scholarship award, Alfredo will be honored at a recognition banquet on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Maryland. Legendary newscaster Sam Donaldson will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Honored guests include: Roland Betts, investor, film producer, developer, and owner of Chelsea Piers in New York City; Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health; and James Sinegal, co-founder and CEO of Costco. World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson will deliver the keynote speech. The public is invited to be a part of this inspirational day. |

- GHS Shines in Labor Day Parade
- On Labor Day the Marching Band, Flags, Poms and Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders marched in the City of Gaithersburg 72nd Labor Day Parade.
The Marching Band took first place in the High School Marching Band category and
the Poms and Cheerleaders took took first place in the Poms and Cheerleaders category.

It was a thrill for her as she got to personally meet and be photographed with President Obama. The event itself was very moving and meaningful and it was a day she will certainly never forget.
- Youth Award of the Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth
- Please congratulate senior Carla Romero for her recognition last evening with the Youth Award of the Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth. The awards are given annually in five categories; Volunteer, Organization, Service Provider, Child Advocate and Youth. Carla was chosen from more than 50 nominees. Montgomery County High Schools were each only allowed to nominate one candidate with the balance of the nominees coming from service organizations throughout the area.

- District II Chamber Choir Festival!
- Congratulations go out to our Chamber Singers for a WONDERFUL performance yesterday at the District II Chamber Choir Festival! They sang beautifully and at a VERY high level of difficulty, resulting in an Excellent rating in performance and a Superior rating in Sightreading! I am VERY proud of our students and the way they performed, but also proud of their outstanding behavior and respect during the whole process. If you see one of the Chamber Singers, pat them on the back for a job well done!

- The Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes and rewards students who earn the highest level of academic achievement and display strong humanitarian qualities, has designated our own Afredo Colina, grade 9, a "Carson Scholar." The award comes with a $1000 scholarship and he will automatically be a contender next year. Congratulations Alfredo!

- Congratulations to Ms. Gable, Austin Duff (11th), Susan Roberts (10th) and Marenka Ralowicz (9th) for competing in the Science Montgomery Science Fair this weekend. This was a the first year we had three participants. On Sunday, Austin Duff was awarded with 9 Community Organization Awards for his robot including one of the most prestigious awards from the CIA, and an offer for a summer internship working with the Navy Department working with a robot they need to examine tanks.

- County and All State Band Recognition
- I would like to recognize Brian Simon for auditioning and making it into the Montgomery County Symphonic Honor Band on Clarinet. Brian also auditioned for the Maryland All State Band and made first alternate in the Clarinet section. This means that if one of the clarinetists from the band who made the section can not attend he will be asked to take that person's place.

- Congratulations to our girls’ barbershop quartet, “All In A Chord.” Last Saturday, they auditioned at Harry Grove Stadium to sing the National Anthem at some of the home games this upcoming season. Out of 70 auditionees, thirty were selected sing the Anthem, and All In A Chord was one of the thirty selected!

- GHS Barbershop Quartet Wins High Honor
- On Saturday, March 7, one of our qualifying girls’ barbershop quartets, All in a Chord,
performed at the Mid Atlantic District’s High School Final Adjudications at the Hyatt
Regency in Reston, Virginia. Our girls TIED FOR FIRST PLACE and were invited to
sing on that evening’s Show of Champions! Let’s hear it for Maggie Schneider, Vibha Rao,
Melissa Augustino, and Awa Secka on a job well done! The girls were also featured on an audio spot on Bob
Madigan’s “Man About Town” segment on WTOP radio on Friday, March 6, and were interviewed and recorded for a

- GHS Swimmers Do Well at Metros
- Led by freshmen Ellen Anderson and Tyler Pham, 8 swimmers representing Gaithersburg did well to help the team place 28th out of 54 teams. Ellen placed 5th in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 free, and Tyler placed 6th in the 100 back and 12th in the 100 fly. - Two freshmen led the Trojans at the Montgomery County Swim & Dive Championships, Feb. 12-14, 2009. Tyler Pham finished 2nd in the 100y Back and 4th in the 100y Fly. Ellen Anderson finished 3rd in the 500y Free and 5th in 100y Back. Throughout the season, Tyler broke 3 school records and remained undefeated in the division, while Ellen also broke 2 school records. Congratulations to these fine swimmers!

- GHS Student Wins Playwrights Award!
- Erika Steagall, has been awarded an Honorable Mention in Arena Stage’s 2009 Student Playwrights Project Ten-Minute Play Competition. Chosen from among 500 submissions, Erika's play will receive a staged reading with professional actors at Source, 1835 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m., with a reception to follow. - Recognition goes to the GHS Jazz Band for achieving superior ratings at the MCPS Jazz Festival which took place December 13th.

- Gaithersburg Junior to Play in Maryland Senior All State Band
- GHS junior, Matt Lappin, was selected to play clarinet in the Maryland Senior All State Band. Matt plays tenor saxophone in our jazz band and clarinet in the symphonic band. The Maryland Senior All State Band will be performing on March 1, 2009 at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, Morgan State University.

- Ms. Jennifer Strelser was recognized on October 3, 2008 by the Bethesda Chapter of the AFCEA (Armed Forces
Communications and Electronic Association) and the AFCEA International Educational Foundation for excellence
and dedication in teaching. They presented her with a Teaching Tools Award and $1,000 to be used to enhance the
classroom teaching experience for students.

- On November 6th, Carla Romo, Vladimir Rodriguez, Ricardo Dunmoodie, and Keith Hyman participated in a Town
Hall Meeting with Governor Martin O’Malley that was held at Gaithersburg High School. Gaithersburg, MD was
"Capital For A Day", and the governor spent the day conducting state business in Gaithersburg. These students
were able to pose questions to the Governor, and they proudly represented Gaithersburg High School.

- Sikandar Porter-Gill, Class of 2009, received a $50,000 scholarship from the Davidson Institute
for his project "The Production of Methane in a Two-Chamber Bio-catalyzed Fuel Cell Utilizing
Methanosarcina barkeri." The Davidson Institute is a national scholarship program for gifted
students. Sikander was one of five recipients of the top level of awards. For more information on

- On Labor Day, the Gaithersburg High School Marching Band performed in the Kensington Labor Day Parade. Later,
they joined the Poms, the Flag Team and the Cheerleaders to lead the Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade.
