Thinking about going to a career college or a technical school?
This U.S. Department of Education web site, www.ed.gov/students/prep/college/consumerinfo/index.html, gives you some questions you'll want to ask before enrolling in a career college or technical school. With so many schools to choose from, it's important that you know the kinds of questions to ask before enrolling. One key issue is whether the school is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or licensed by the state in which it is located.

"Year Up Program"
Low-Moderate Income, Legal, Minority High School Graduates receive Free Training, Paid Internships, and College Credits in this very special program.

A growing number of low and moderate-income, minority youth leave high school lacking either the credentials and/or the skills to advance toward a college degree. Many will enter college only to become discouraged and drop out. To help address these challenges, Year Up was founded in October 2000 as a one-year intensive education and apprenticeship program for urban young adults. Year Up offers job training and apprenticeships in Information Technology and Investment Operations. Participants learn valuable skills, get job experience, earn college credits and get paid while they are learning! The program is full time, 5 days a week, for one year.

During the first six months, students focus on technical and professional skill development with an emphasis on communication, teamwork, problem solving, and leadership. During the second six months, students apply their skills in apprenticeships with leading local companies. A stipend ranging from $150 - $280 per week will be paid throughout the one-year program.

Applicants must be:
  • 18-24 years of age,
  • have a high school diploma or GED certificate by the start of the program,
  • be a resident of Washington, DC, Fairfax, Montgomery, or Prince Georges County,
