Important Information
Many so-called scholarship and financial aid "services" charge large fees by promising to help students and families find money to attend various colleges and universities. But beware! Students and parents often complain they do not receive what they expect from such services. In fact, the service being offered is often a chance to pay for financial aid or financial aid information that can actually be obtained for free.
There are many scholarship opportunities available through community organizations, local professional associations, unions, alumni associations, and other groups intending to benefit particular populations. The best source of free information about such scholarships is your high school counseling (guidance) office. Information is also available at local libraries, bookstores, and through free Internet search engines.

- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
-
- New! Seniors! As of January 1, 2012, you can start filling out the FAFSA. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Make sure you file the form using the correct year: it will be 2012-2013 because this is the academic year you will be enrolled in college. You will need your families’ federal income tax information for 2011 to file this document electronically. If you also worked in 2011, you will need to submit your tax information as well. If any of this information is not yet available, you can file the information used from the 2010 filing as an estimate. Then when the 2011 data is available, you can update your figures. It is important that seniors file these forms before March 1st so that they may qualify for Maryland-based financial aid. The Federal money is portable but the Maryland funds can only be used if the student attends an in-state institution. Students will need to create a PIN number for themselves and one for a parent. The FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and the telephone number to call for help is 1-800-4-FED-AID.
