"Imani Winds, a world-renowned wind quintet, thrilled students at Greencastle
Elementary School
today (Jan. 24) with two educational performances. The group
of African American classical musicians introduced students to their
instruments—flute (played by Valerie Coleman, who also composes music),
clarinet (Mariam Adam), oboe (Toyin Spellman-Diaz), bassoon (Monica
Ellis) and French horn (Jeff Scott, also a composer)—and talked about
basic musical foundations.

The ensemble will perform in Strathmore’s Music in the Mansion concert
series as part of a three-day residency presented by Strathmore. Imani
Winds will also lead educational events for more than 1,250 students,
from prekindergarten through graduate students. This includes a visit to
students at Broad Acres Elementary School.

With performance and a commitment to commissioning new work, the group
has appeared at many of the country’s major concert venues, including
Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, and has
collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Wayne Shorter."
