Global Wizards was launched in 2003, by Interages (a nonprofit organization in Montgomery County), to spark an interest in Geography – a subject no longer regularly taught in schools – among young children. You may ask, “Why geography?” The answer is that half of young Americans can’t find New York on a map and only 37% can identify Iraq. Interages believes the more we know about our world, the better we can relate to people from other countries.
In Global Wizards, students in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades will learn basic geographic skills and concepts through exploring a new area of the world during eight weekly, one hour after school sessions. The curricula are based on established National Geography Standards, and closely align with the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum social studies/geography guidelines.
Students will work in small groups with guidance from experienced adult volunteers (ages 50+) in a friendly, intergenerational learning environment. Lessons will teach new skills, reinforce reading and math knowledge, encourage team/shared learning and offer fun, creative activities. Sessions will include basic map skills and vocabulary, along with continent-specific information on animals, vegetation, climate, major landmarks, and natural resources.
Global Wizards will return in the fall!
