Ms. Serino

Alison L. Serino, Principal

Education: B.A. in History, Brown University;
M.S. in Educational Administration, Johns Hopkins University;
Currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Educational Policy, University of Maryland

Ms. Serino grew up in Silver Spring about six miles from Loiederman Middle School. She experienced fabulous teachers at Cannon Road ES, White Oak MS and Springbrook HS who inspired her to become a teacher. Her work with Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc. helped build her teaching skills and her work with Theodore Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools helped build her thinking skills.

Since making the switch from teaching social studies (government, anthropology and world studies) to administration, Ms. Serino has worked to uphold Dr. Weast's image of a school administrator as a "teacher on special assignment." She believes that teaching is the toughest and most influential career one can choose and is dedicated to sustaining a school environment where teaching and learning will consistently occur at the highest levels. She wants LMS graduates to have the same educational opportunities that stretched her mind and launched her career.

Ms. Serino is privileged to lead a whole school magnet dedicated to the arts. She is impressed daily by the creativity and thoughtfulness of LMS students and staff members alike.

In her spare time, Ms. Serino enjoys reading, playing basketball, hiking and traveling. She has served as an adjunct lecturer at American University teaching social studies methodology and regularly facilitates leadership sessions for middle and high school students.
