Please note:  If your child is in Ms. Patten or Ms. Connolly's math class, please refer to the math section on the fourth grade web page.

During the first part of quarter two the students will complete the unit on measurement.  The expectation is for each student to master the following objectives:

  • Estimate and measure length (inches, feet, yards, centimeters, meters).
    • Be able to use a ruler to measure to the nearest inch, half inch, fourth inch, eighth of an inch, centimeter.
  • Convert between inches, feet, and yards.
    • 12 inches = 1 foot
    • 3 feet = 1 yard
  • Model the concepts area and perimeter using concrete materials.
    • Area is the amount or size inside of a figure.
      • Multiply length x width
      • For an unusually shaped figure, count how many whole squares are on the inside of the figure, and then combine the partial squares to come up with a total.
      • Area is measured in square units (square inches, square feet, square yard, square centimeter)
  • Estimate and count to find perimeter and area of figures.
    • Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a figure.
      • Add each of the lengths around the figure together to come up with the perimeter.
      • Perimeter is measured in units (inches, feet, centimeters, yards)
  • Use length to solve problems.

Spelling
We would appreciate parents checking that the spelling homework is completed.  If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher. We are in full swing of our new spelling and word work programs! The students have differentiated spelling lists based on the numerous pre-assessments we gave in September.

We are currently running our program as a two-week cycle. One week we have spelling and the next week we do word work. Research says that students progress through stages in their spelling development. Students were grouped according to the spelling stage they are currently struggling with and every other week we complete word sort activities that require the students to identify patterns in words and to find and sort additional words that fit that spelling/sound/meaning pattern.  We are very excited that the students are working at levels that are most meaningful to them, and we can’t wait to watch their improvement this year! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us!

beaker iconScience
We will wrap up our study of plant growth and development in early-to mid-November, when we pollinate our flowers with dried bees! As a culminating homework activity, each student will create a model of a flower, using materials found at hone.  Our next science unit is Crime Scene Chemistry, during which we will investigate fingerprinting and paper chromatography.

Social Studies
In social studies students are still learning how economic resources and geographic characteristics are classified.  We are also currently focusing on our communities and defining our neighborhood through geography and economics.  Students will continue identifying geographic characteristics and human-made features.  We are continuing to learn about human, natural, and capital resources and the production process.

We know they will do a fabulous job!
