Our Second unit (Unit 2AB) is Decimals, Fractions and Percents.  During Unit 2AB we will be working to answer the following essential questions:  (The unit 2AB assessment will be on November 19, 2008)

  • Why are specific units and tools used to measure different attributes?
  • What determines a reasonable estimation for a given situation?
  • What is the purpose of estimation?
  • How do operations with whole numbers compare to operations with decimals
  • How can estimation skills and algorithms reinforce one another?

Writing
In Writing we will be writing for personal expression through a poetry study. This quarter we will work together to answer the following essential questions:

  • How do writers find topics and ideas for writing?
  • How does word choice affect the thoughts and feelings of the reader?
  • How can I use my writer’s notebook as a resource when writing poetry?
  • How does knowing about an author or poet and his or her work help me become a better writer?
  • How can revising poems make them better?
  • What are some ways to end a poem and leave the reader satisfied?

Spelling

This quarter we will work together to answer the following essential questions:

  • What strategies do writers use to spell difficult words?
  • How can I make my writing clear for my reader?
  • How does knowing Greek and Latin roots help me understand and spell many words?
  • How does learning a suffix help me understand more words?
  • Why is it important to consider the meaning and spelling of a word I am using?

During the first quarter, fifth graders will be learning the answers to these essential questions:

Our first unit is Force, Motion and Energy.  We will be working to answer the following essential questions:

Field Trips
On November 30th we will be going to the Smith Center for an activity about astronomy.  Please return your permission slips (page 1 and page 2) as soon as possible.

On December 17th we will be going to the Capitol Building and the American History Museum in Washington, DC.  Please return your permission slips (page 1 and page 2 and page 3 ) as soon as possible.


Other Important Information
Please make sure that you are reviewing your child’s assignment book every night.  Students should be completing their reading logs every night.  They are to be turned in every Friday.
