General InformationSchool hours are 8:50 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. * The 2009-2010 school year will have with students being dismissed to classrooms at 8:40. Students who come in after 8:50 will continue to be marked as tardy. Half Day hours are from 8:50 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Luxmanor Elementary School Standards of Behavior - Please read our Discipline Policy. At Luxmanor there are 4 buses with different route numbers. Each bus is identified by a color. It would be helpful to make sure your youngster can identify the color of his/her bus to eliminate first day of school jitters! Note that the four-digit route numbers displayed in the windows on the sides of the bus are used to identify which bus a child should ride, not the two or three digit numbers painted on the bus. Any questions about bus schedules should be directed to the Transportation Office at 301-469-1140. Adjustments in the routes or times expected for the bus arrival are common over the first week of school as it is difficult to determine the exact time for a stop. Following the first week, students should arrive at the stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is expected.
Arrival at School - Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:30 a.m. since supervision cannot be provided until then. Between 8:30 a.m. and 8:40 a.m., students in kindergarten and grades 1 - 5 will line up in the gymnasium. Students being dropped off in the carpool lane should enter the gym from the gym side doors (next to the carpool lane) straight into the gym. Students who either walk to school or ride the bus should enter the building through the main entrance doors next to the gym and then enter the gym. Students are dismissed to homeroom classes beginning at 8:40 a.m. Students arriving to school after 8:40 a.m. but prior to 8:50 a.m. should proceed directly to class. After 8:50 a.m., students are marked tardy and must report to the office. Dismissal at School - Due to the new layout of the school, there will be two separate exit doors for students who are walkers or who are car riders.
Leaving School - Students are expected to return home directly after school. Students who are going home with a friend must have a written note from a parent. The receiving parent must also write a note to confirm. Students are not permitted to change after school plans without a written note from their parents. These precautions are taken to ensure the safety of your child. Additionally, students may not stay after school at Luxmanor unless they have written parental permission to stay for a school sponsored after-school activity. Students are not permitted on the Luxmanor playground after school unless they have first returned home and then return to school with parental supervision. Carpool Lane Procedures - Student safety is our number one concern. If you are driving your children to school, please adhere to the following procedures for dropping off and picking up your child during arrival and dismissal. Our goal is to get you through the line as quickly and safely as possible.
Breakfast - Breakfast is served from 8:30A to 8:50A and costs $1.30. Reduced price for qualified students remains at $0.30. Breakfast is not served on late opening days. Lunch - Lunch and/or milk will be available daily in the cafeteria, including the first day of school. Elementary lunch will be $2.40. Reduced price for qualified students remains at $0.40 for lunch. Milk will cost $0.60. Guidelines and application forms for free and reduced meals will be sent home during the first week of school or you can find the application online at MCPS Food Service. Lunch is served at: Grade K & 2: 11:30A to 11:55A Cafeteria Bank - We are using the SNAP computerized cafeteria cash register system. Parents are expected to put money in their child's account for this purpose. Even if your child normally brings a lunch to school, it is a very good idea to place five dollars in the account for emergency situations. Pay in advance by sending a check made out to “Luxmanor ES Cafeteria” with the child’s full name on the check. The cost of the meal is deducted automatically from the computer. You will then receive a low balance letter when the account is low or out of money. myLunchMoney.com - myLunchMoney.com is a service that allows parents to make pre-payments to their child's cafeteria account with a credit/debit card using the Internet, check balances, view student purchases, and recieve low balance email notification. Note, there is a fee for this service. Transportation - Please note the bus schedule. IMPORTANT: The four-digit route numbers displayed in the windows on the sides of the bus are used to identify which bus a child should ride, not the two or three digit numbers painted on the bus. Student Absences - If your child is absent for any reason, please call the school office(301-230-5914) by 9:30 a.m. This helps cut down on the task of phone calling. A written note must be sent to the teacher when your child returns with the reason for the absence, the date of the absence and your signature. You can also leave a message before/after school hours on our telephone message machine. If you know in advacne that your child will be absent, please send a note to their teacher with the dates they will miss school. PLEASE NOTE: The Maryland State Department of Education has made changes in the attendance policies for all Maryland counties. Effective July 1, 2007, the following rules apply to all grade levels:

Families of students who walk or drive to school need to make a concerted effort to be in classrooms no later than 8:50 a.m. Late Arrivals - A child is late if he/she arrives after 8:50A. If you have not done so, please call Mrs. Kuhlman (301-230-5914), school secretary, about the after school care plans for your child if your child is not to return to your home at the end of the school day. Please discuss these arrangements with your child prior to the first day of school. PTA-Sponsored Programs - The PTA sponsors a number of activities such as Mad Science and Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES). Questions concerning these programs should be directed to the chairperson or other PTA executive board members. Be sure to discuss the activities with your child prior to enrollment. This will help to insure a positive experience for your child. Medication at School - No medication will be administered in school unless the child's parent/guardian and physician have completed an authorization form. These forms are available in the office and are required for each medication a child must take during the school day. If your child will need medication on the first day of school, the completed form and medicine should be brought to school in advance. Medication, including non-prescription medication, must not be sent to school with the student. Directory Information - Please read the letter you receive at home the first week of school about directory information. If you do not want directory information released, please return the form by the deadline. Messages - Emergency messages only may be delivered to students at school so that instructional time is not interrupted. Students may use the no-charge phone near the office with teacher permission and a hall pass. School Supplies - Teachers have prepared a list of school supplies that they would like students to have. Please make sure that names are clearly marked on anything personal (excluding tissues, towels, soap...to be shared by all) so that we can eliminate mix ups. Each student will be responsible for replacing any item that is lost or used during the year. Make sure to ask if your child still has pencils and crayons all year. It is important that each student come prepared each day. Look for additional information about school procedures and programs during the school year! |
