PTA


The PTA generally meets the first Tuesday evening of every month during the school year, unless otherwise noted. The Monocacy Calendar shows planned PTA sponsored events and meetings. We hope that you will actively participate along with PTA officers in the committees that make the many PTA sponsored activities possible.

PTA Committee Volunteer Opportunities
Attention parents. Feel free to get an early start and sign up for a committee for next school year. Chairpersons and volunteers needed for the committees listed below:

Bake Sale
Coordinate baked goods for the sale during school and/or funding raising events throughout the school year.
Kidstuff Coupon Book
The family-friendly KidStuff Coupon Savings Book offers valuable coupons to help save hundreds of dollars on clothing, toys, sporting goods, educational activities, food and much, much more. KidStuff quickly pays for itself and offers a 50% profit to our school.Committee member shelp coordinate distribution and collection of books and payments.
Big Bobcat Readers (Adults)
This is the MES parents' book club. We meet on the 4th Monday of each month at a member's home to discuss a book. We read books on a variety of subjects.
Landscaping
This committee assists with planting, weeding, mulching and general maintenance of MES property.
Bobcat Readers
This program is designed to encourage children to read books every day. Incentives are awarded to those children who read the number of books for each challenge. This committee works in coordination with staff and Mrs. Duranko.
MCCPTA Delegate
Attends MCCPTA monthly meetings held in Rockville. Represents MES and reports back to the PTA executive board.
Book Fair
Coordinate with the Scholastic Book Fair in the Fall and Spring. Volunteers needed for setting up, working during the dates of the fairs and taking down the fair.
Membership
Solicits parents to join the MES PTA by attending school sponsored events.
Box Tops for Education
Coordinate collection of box tops for the school.
NAACP Rep
This committee attends NAACP meetings representing MES at the county level.
Campbell Soup Labels
Coordinate collection of soup levels for the school.
Paw Prints
Meet with student volunteers on a regular basis throughout the school year to solicit articles, feature stories, etc. for a student newspaper.
Carrabba's Night
Carrabba's Night is a PTA fundraiser that is typically hosted at St. Mary's Pavilion. The committee chair, in conjunction with Carrabba's Restaurant, plans the evening. Carrabba's provides the food and MES organizes the facility, paper products and desserts.
Phone Directory
Coordinates the MES directory of staff, PTA officers and volunteers, committee chairs and volunteers and student names, addresses and phone numbers.
Chess Club
Meets two mornings a week before school (8:30-8:55). You do not need chess experience to help with this club. Parents are needed to monitor chess matches and help beginning chess players learn the game, share a simple chess strategy, or find guest teachers to do the same.
Playground
This committee meets to discuss the needs and fundraising for new playground equipment for MES.
Childcare
This committee coordinates childcare for meting and workshops at MES. Middle and high school students can earn community service hours.
Public Relations
Advertises MES events to local media.
Classroom Volunteer Coordinator
This committee is responsible for the smooth operation of the classroom/school volunteer program. This includes log  book tallies, and teacher and staff needs per request.
Reading Mentors
This program is designed to assist children in reading during the school day. The committee will coordinate with Mrs. Duranko and staff.
Cluster Rep
This committee attends quarterly meetings with representatives from PES, JPMS and PHS. Provides a cluster meeting report to the MES PTA executive board.
Sally Foster
This is the first fund raiser of the school tear. Volunteers assist with tallying orders and money collected to ensure orders balance. Upon arrival, products need to be delivered to all classrooms for delivery to parents.
Drama Club
Select production, locate script, create costumes and set design. Supervise children during rehearsals and work with high school volunteers.
School Sign
This committee changes the outdoor sign as required for special events, news i.e. Back to School Night, etc.
Family Fun Night
Organize evenings during the school year, secure food and entertainment for MES families. Also includes set up. take down and assisting the evening of the event. Volunteers can sign up for more than one FFN committees:
     Fall Fest (October 2l, 2006)
     Valentine's Party (February 9, 2007)
     Bucket Bingo (April 27, 2007)
School Store
Assist students with selling school supplies before school a few mornings a week.
5th Grade Year End
This committee coordinates the year end activities and picnic for the 5th Grade graduating class.
SIP (School Improvement Plan)
Committee members attend meetings throughout the school year with Mrs. Duranko and teachers to review MES goals.
Giant/Safeway
Sign up program and advertise throughout the MES community. Money is donated to MES for every dollar spent at Giant or Safeway.
Spirit T-Shirt Sales
MES spirit t-shirts are available twice a year. Silk-screened and embroidered t-shirts and sweatshirts are available for sale.
Hands on Science
Chairperson - Prepares fliers, collects monies and registrations, completes and sends out class information forms and is the point-of-contact with parents and the national HOS program.
Class Leaders - You need two things: the desire to be a class leader and training from the national HOS program in Silver Spring. The training is free, and it's quite good.  It covers the curriculum for each session, plus there is also a special class on "How to be a Teacher" that gives lots of good advice. Also, you can choose to be a volunteer or be paid  There is more information about the program at the HOS website: www.hands-on-science.org.
Staff Appreciation
Coordinate a monthly event for MES staf, i.e. breakfast, lunch, treats, etc. Each grade sponsors one event during the school year. This committee also coordinates the year-end luncheon for the staff
Sunshine Committee
Send birthday, sympathy cards and/or flowers to families or staff as needed.
 
Holiday Gift Shop
This committee coordinates the items available for children to purchase during the winter holiday season. Assists children with selections and purchases during the dates of the gift shop.
Yearbook
Take and gather candid photographs, design pages, work with publisher, sell and distribute yearbooks.
