Accelerated Core Curriculum

What is unique about the Magnet Consortium?
Each school will feature an accelerated core curriculum and specialty courses for the magnet instructional focus. MCPS will recruit talented teachers and train these teachers to help students prepare for an academically rigorous program and to provide instructional opportunities to students beyond the school day. Parents will be invited to support their child's advanced studies through an open home-school dialogue and evening activities.

Accelerated Core Curriculum
The Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC) Accelerated Core Curriculum will provide students with engaging learning opportunities to develop the knowledge and study habits that lead to success in high school and college. The Accelerated Core Curriculum combines MCPS curriculum with instructional and assessment enhancements from the College Board, the producers of the SAT and Advanced Placement college courses. These enhancements carefully target the reading, writing, and math skills known to lead to success in advanced courses in high school and college. In addition, students will have the opportunity to take more high-school-level courses in MSMC schools, with the possibility of earning up to 8 high school credits by the end of Grade 8.

Each school will share common elements of the Accelerated Core Curriculum, including:

  • introductory and culminating events that help focus a unit of study;
  • coaching in writing, reading, public speaking, mathematics, and study habits;
  • opportunity to earn credit for up to eight high school courses; and
  • opportunity to take advanced courses that relate to each magnet's instructional focus.
