Montgomery Village Middle School's Special Education Program follows the MCPS Board of Education Policy to include students with special needs in all academic and nonacademic activities, along with students in the general education program, to the fullest extent possible and as appropriate to the needs of each student.
Secondary Learning Center
Montgomery Village has one of the five Secondary Learning Centers in MCPS. The program offers all academics in self-contained classes. There is a smaller student ratio as well as a para-educator in these classrooms. All students participating in these classes are identified through a multidisciplinary team process. Classes are based on a student's Individual Education Plan (IEP), accommodations, goals and objectives.
Learning for Independence
The Learning for Independence Program (LFI) serves students whose primary disability is mild to moderate mental retardation. The goal of the program is to provide instruction in functional life skills and basic academics in the context of the general education environment and community settings. All students are included in typical education environments to the greatest extent possible.
Asperger
Montgomery Village houses one of the middle school Asperger Programs. This program serves students whose complex learning, language and behavioral needs require systematic, receptive instruction in small group as well, as in a mainstream setting.
Resource Program
In the Resource Program at Montgomery Village, all teachers address the needs of special education students and provide equal opportunities for learning. Emphasis is placed on understanding and accommodating the needs of diverse learner's from the perspective of the regular classroom teacher, who shares the responsibility with a specially trained teacher. Together, and with the help and support of parents, Montgomery Village provides the consistent application of instructional methods and adaptations throughout the student's day so that IEP goals and instructional objectives can be achieved.
Related Services
Related Services are delivered within the context of a Tran disciplinary integrated therapy model. Related service providers plug into the ongoing activities/instruction rather than pulling students out of instruction. In some instances pullout may be used with individual students particularly when introducing a new skill. The related service providers are also responsible for consulting with general education and special education staff on ways to work with students within their area of expertise so specialized instruction can occur during the school day.
Alternative Level 1 Program
This program is available to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who are at academic risk and who have no other academic supports available to them. The program provides individualized academic support, as well as instruction in organization and study skills. The primary goals of the Alternative Program are to improve academic performance, motivation, and responsibility. Assignments from academic classes are the focus of daily work, and supplemental materials are used to reinforce concepts. With ongoing guidance and monitoring, most students should be able to experience greater success and remain in the mainstream of school activities. Students are recommended for participation in the Alternative Program by their academic team.
