MCPS and Montgomery Village Middle School subscribe to many valuable online resources each year enabling students to access the best possible information for school and personal research.

These resources are accessible from within any school, but are also accessible from home. You can get a list of the sites and passwords from the Media Center or from Edline.

ABC-CLIO World History: Ancient and Medieval
Ranging from the dawn of prehistory through the great ancient empires to the beginning of the Renaissance students explore history on every continent.  Overviews and activities include thousands of authoritative primary and secondary sources, in-depth explorations, and profiles of city-states, countries, and regions of the ancient world. Chronological and thematic organization including articles by ABC-CLIOs editors, other secondary sources and primary source documents.  Pictures, artwork, historical maps, etc. are also included.

Art Museum Image Gallery
A rich digital resource of art images and related multimedia gathered from the collections of distinguished museums around the world that are rights-cleared for educational use. These images present a broad range of time and place spanning artistic creation from 3000 B.C. to the present, with art from the cultures of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including Native American and Meso-American peoples.  Images are also culled from six renowned digital collections of the Library of Congress which include topics such as American landscapes, portrait photography of celebrities, the Harlem Renaissance, and an extensive poster collection.  Also represented are items from fine and decorative arts such as textiles, costumes, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, glass, books and manuscripts and archaeological finds. 

Columbia Granger's World of Poetry
Is the largest collection of full text poems on the Web. The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry Online offers users access to 250,000 poems in full text with 450,000 poem citations. Granger's includes a wide range of critical and historical tools and features to enhance an understanding and enjoyment of poetry such as commentaries on famous poems, biographies of leading poets, glossary terms, including examples of terms defined, poem comparison allows any two poems—for example, a poem in translation, and in its original language—to be viewed together, full text access to Columbia University Press books on poetry, foreign language poetry in its original language and in translations, audio recordings of the best-known poetry read by poets. 

CultureGrams
Up to date information on 182 countries and cultures.  25 categories are tracked including history, land and climate, religion, personal appearance, gestures, language, government, family, dating and marriage, etc.

eLibrary Elementary
An easy-to-use full-text general reference database designed specifically to guide younger readers and researchers and older students who need differentiated materials.  Answers to research questions are found in magazines, newspapers, books, transcripts, maps, images, educator-approved websites and audio/video titles.  Access to historical and current multimedia content enriches the text-only information supporting multiple learning styles.

Explore American history through primary sources and multimedia.

Encyclopaedia Britannica: Global Reference Center
Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French Britannica encyclopaedias and another link to the Spanish Reference Center.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Academic Edition
Although every student has access to this encyclopaedia it is recommended for high school and higher education. 

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online School Edition
3 encyclopedias in one: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Compton’s by Britannica and Britannica Elementary.   A search will return articles from all 3 encyclopedias so students can choose which level meets their needs. 

Encyclopaedia Britannica: Spanish Reference Center: Enciclopedia Juvenil y Gran Enciclopedia Planeta
Enciclopedia Juvenil provides a Spanish elementary encyclopedia, images, videos, and Spanish language learning materials specifically designed for younger learners.  Gran Enciclopedia Planeta is the most comprehensive Spanish language encyclopedia available today. It features 145,000 articles plus timelines, an atlas, and a dictionary.

Encyclopaedia Britannica : Webster's Third New International Dictionary Unabridged
Throw out that URL to dictionary.com.  This is a real dictionary and without those pesky advertisements and pop-ups.  Keep this one open as a window on your desktop whenever you are writing or researching!

Encyclopaedia Britannica: World Data Analyst
Similar to CultureGrams, World Data Analyst provides "Country Snapshots."  However, it goes further -- students can create "current comparisons" of countries based on a large list of data points. It is also possible to make "chronological comparisons," which compares changes over time up to 90 years. 

History Resource Center: U.S.
A collection of primary and secondary resources to support the study of United States history from middle school through college. Provides a complete overview of U.S. history covering the most-
studied events, issues and current information. Selected by expert history advisors for its relevance in the undergraduate curriculum, the content combines Original materials from Primary Source Microfilm's digital archives-including documents, monographs, pamphlets, first-person accounts; encyclopedic articles built from the foundation of respected MacMillan Reference USA and Charles Scribner's Sons information, as well as other Gale original, proprietary content such as country and era overviews, full-text periodicals and scholarly history journals; an historical bibliography; links to digitized special collections; audio and video clips of historic speeches and events.

Issues & Controversies
Explores today’s controversial issues in depth and in language student researchers
can understand. Includes timelines, primary source documents, statistical
tables,  editorial cartoons, newspaper editorials and interviews with experts which provide context and perspective. Issues are ripped from the headlines and links to key news coverage and other background information, giving context to the discussion. Issues are succinctly defined and pros and cons are given for each.

NoodleTools
This is an online bibliography (works cited) composer and note taking tool.  The student inputs the information necessary and prints out the bibliography. Students can also take notes online using this product. Instruction in the necessary input is still needed but it takes away the format and punctuation headaches!  This product is also very useful to MCPS staff who are taking higher education classes.

ProQuest Professional Education (aka Professional Journals)
Full-text professional  publications for K-12 educators and high school students.  All subject areas are addressed. Great for teachers working on graduate degrees. Great for students with advanced research needs.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers (New York Times)
Primary source historical newspapers from the New York Times from 1851 through 2005.

Science Resource Center (Purchased by SAILOR)
Science Resource Center includes thousands of topic overviews, experiments, biographies, pictures and illustrations. Articles are from 200 magazines and scholarly journals.  Curriculum related topics cover a wide range of topics related to science curricula and correlated to national and Maryland standards.

SIRS Decades
SIRS Decades covers the 20th century decade by decade with 5,000 primary and secondary sources selected by the editors of SIRS. This has been an invaluable resource for 7th grade research on the 1940s and 8th grade research on the 1930s. 

SIRS Discoverer
The database includes carefully selected full-text articles and images from more than 1,600 domestic and international newspapers, magazines, government documents, and websites. This resource is especially useful elementary school researchers and students in middle and high schools who need information at lower reading levels.

SIRS Knowledge Source
SIRS Knowledge Source includes SIRS Researcher, a periodical database.  Resident in SIRS Researcher is a link to SIRS Pro/Con which has been very important to issues research for middle and high schools.  Also included in SIRS Knowledge Source is SIRS Renaissance, current perspectives on the arts and humanities, SIRS Web Select, a student search engine with editorially selected websites and SIRS Interactive Citizenship, interactive books on U.S. citizenship.  Links to SIRS Decades and SIRS Discoverer can also be found on the SKS homepage.

Student NewsNet (from Encyclopaedia Britannica)
Engages students with timely, relevant news and current events. Designed for students in grades 4-8, related learning activities and lesson plans teach students how to organize facts, make connections, and use information in problem-solving activities. searchable articles with more added each week give students and educators a complete look at recent events. Separate sections devoted to Science and Civics news and lessons include teacher resources and current events features.

Student Resource Center, Jr.
Databases of curriculum targeted primary documents, biographies), topical essays, critical analysis, full-text coverage of newspapers and periodicals.  These databases are an excellent resource for information across the curriculum. Uses their own reading scale – basic, intermediate and advanced.

Teachingbooks.net
Teaching books is a unique service that provides up close and personal interviews (multimedia abounds!) with some of the most loved and respected children and young adult authors.  Also included are an array of lesson plans and other resources for use by language arts teachers and for students. Great for author studies at all grade levels.

World Book Web School and Library Edition
Includes access to World Book Student, World Book Kids (an elementary encyclopedia), Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos, an elementary Spanish language encyclopedia, the World Book Atlas and the World Book Dictionary.

 


Montgomery County Public Library Online Services
Student and Teacher Use Policy

Students and teachers may access Montgomery County Public Library's (MCPL) online services through the MCPL homepage by using the barcode numbers on the back of their individual public library borrower's card. Library media specialists:

  • encourage students and teachers to apply for public library cards
  • acquaint them with the MCPS homepage and the number and variety of resources, including the online services that it makes available to Montgomery County citizens in the libraries and through remote access
  • instruct students to use their public library cards if they want to access these resources
