Students use the Kidspiration program to model multiplication and division fact families. Each rod represents a different number on the grid. For instance, the yellow rod covers 5 squares. In the example above, the student recognizes that there are six groups or six rows of yellow rods. Each rod covers five squares. 6 x 5 = 30 squares covered. They can also reason that five squares are covered in each of six rows. There are 30 squares covered, or 5 x 6 = 30. The models also show the inverse, division. There are 30 squares covered in six rows. There are five squares covered in each row. 30 ÷ 6 = 5. There are 30 squares covered and each row has five squares. There are are six rows, or 30 ÷ 5 = 6

Indicators:
6.2.4.2 use concrete objects to model
multiplication and division facts.
6.3.6.2 explain and apply the concept
of inverse operation as it relates to
multiplication and division.
6.3.5.4 model and explain division in
a variety of ways, including repeated
subtraction, rectangular arrays, and
by its inverse relationship to
multiplication.
