Students, staff and friends of W.T. Page Elementary School honored America's veterans at a ceremony on Monday, November 12, 2007.   Girl Scouts from troops #1528 and #3140 performed the flag ceremony.  The Page chorus, under the direction of Hedylajo Kilgore, led the group in singing the "Star Spangled Banner" and "America."  Speakers included Principal Deb Berner, retired Lt. Col. (and Page parent) Patricia Lane and student government president Thalia R.  (see Thalia's speech below.)

Good morning.  I am Thalia R., your student government president.  I am here today to talk to all of our Page students about Veterans' Day.  What is Veterans' Day?
I was not sure what Veterans' Day was, so I went around the school to ask students in all different grades the question, "What is Veterans' Day?"  Here is what some of you said.
A kindergartener said he did not know.  I then went to ask some first and second graders and they also said they did not know.  The third grader I asked said it is like when you celebrate people that were in wars.  Two fourth graders said it is the day my mom visits school and it is the day veterans died.  A fifth frader shared it is the people who are working in the war and we are honoring them.
So, I learned something about Veterans' Day from talking to many of you students.  I still had some questions so I looked it up on the Internet.  Listen carefully now so you will know what Veterans' Day is in case you are ever asked.
Veterans' Day is celebrated in November.  It is the day we honor every American man and woman who has served in any armed forces.  There are celebrations on Veterans' Day with speeches and parades like ours.  It is the day we honor many outstanding citizens.  So remember students, when someone asks you, "What is Veterans' Day," think about what you have learned here today.
