The Global Ecology Studies Program's
philosophy is to endow students with a sense of environmental
citizenship, responsibility and appreciation. GESP's
interdisciplinary honors science and social studies program
teaches students the interconnections of the natural world and the
impact of human activity on those systems.
GESP partners with several environmental groups including:
- Bridging the Watershed - Alice Ferguson Foundation
- Hood College-research plot and
laboratory work
- NIH, NOAH, & The National Park
Service-internships
- U.S. Fisheries-aquaculture &
hydroponics
- Living Classrooms-American
Shad restoration
- CBF-bay grass restoration &
field studies
- CBT-funding for projects
- Jane Goodall Institute
- A Tale of Two Watersheds - Thorpewood Environmental Education Center & Hood College
The Global Ecology Studies
Program is located at Poolesville High School. The school is
ideally situated in a rural setting. While PHS is the smallest
high school in Montgomery County, it has a strong academic
reputation. The small size guarantees that the staff knows their
students. PHS was ranked 5th in State Achievement Tests for the
entire state of Maryland in 2004. PHS was recognized in
Washingtonian Magazine in September of 2004 as one of the top
20 Maryland schools with the highest average SAT scores.
