Principal: Dr. Nelson McLeod
In July 2008, Dr. Nelson McLeod was appointed principal of Richard Montgomery High School. He previously served as the first principal of the Newport Mill Middle School in Kensington, Maryland; was assistant principal at Takoma Park Middle School; was a personnel specialist at the Office of Human Resources (MCPS); and a personnel officer with the Frederick County Public Schools in Frederick, Maryland. His undergraduate degree is in Special Education and Master’s degree is in Secondary Learning Disabilities. He completed post graduate work in school administration at Johns Hopkins University and received his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy with a concentration in Organizational Leadership and Policy Studies from University of Maryland, College Park. His dissertation was “Exploring the Relationship Between School Leadership and Mathematics Achievement: An Examination of Leadership Practices of Principals.”
Dr. McLeod is the 2006 recipient of The Washington Post Distinguished Education Leadership Award for Montgomery County (Principal of the Year). He was the 2007 Maryland State Middle School Principal of the Year, by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals, and received the 2007 Educator of Excellence for Minority Achievement Award by the Maryland State Department of Education.
To support the community, Dr. McLeod volunteers his time to civic and educational organizations. He is on the Advisory Board of The Washington Post Vincent E. Reed Principals Leadership Institute, the Hampton University Honors College Advisory Board, and serves as a Peer Reviewer, Principal Leadership (a publication of the National Association of Secondary School Principals).
