RAMS Happy News!

Some recent accomplishments by the great students and staff at Rockville High School:

RHS Music Department Named GRAMMY Finalist!

The Rockville High School Music Department has been named a finalist for the 2010 GRAMMY Signature Schools program. Rockville is one of 140 finalists nationwide, four within the state of Maryland, and the only school in Montgomery County.

The GRAMMY Signature Schools program, sponsored by the Gibson Foundation, recognizes and awards public high school music programs each year. Each GRAMMY Signature School receives a monetary grant from $1000 to $10,000 to benefit their music program. In an effort to increase local recognition of these excellent music programs and the importance of continuing music education in schools, the GRAMMY Foundation secures professional musicians to participate at GRAMMY Signature presentation events. Guest artists have included Yolanda Adams, Dave Chapelle, Bob Seger, Josh Kelley, Randy Travis, Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child, No Doubt, Michael McDonald, Ray Benson, Shawn Colvin, Billy Corgan, Gavin DeGraw, Edwin McCain, Brian McKnight, Lisa Marie Presley, Chuck Rainey, Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish, Juan Winans and Carvin Winans, Jr.

A blue-ribbon panel of judges, made up of top music educators and industry professionals, will narrow the list of finalists down to 20-25 schools to be designated as GRAMMY Signature Schools. Schools warranting consideration have to submit a detailed application outlining what their music department offers the student population, as well as support the music department receives from administration, parents and the community. Finalists must also submit recordings of various school ensembles to be heard and judged by the panel.

The 2010 GRAMMY Signature Schools will be announced in March.

Outstanding Performance by Rampage Staff Members

Rampage staff members dominated the Journalism Education Association’s Write-Off competition held Friday night in Washington DC.  Nearly 2,300 students from around the country competed in the competition.  There were over 30 categories in the competition.

Receiving Superior rating (equivalent of first place)
Kaitlin Clifford in the editorial writing category
Receiving Excellent rating (equivalent of second place)
Adrienne Lane, News writing,
Elizabeth Preza Commentary writing
Receiving Honorable Mention (equivalent of third place)
Samantha Cooney, Feature Writing
Brittaney Sloan Caption writing and Student Life

If you see these students, congratulate them on a job well done.  This competition is EXTREMELY difficult and very competitive!

The competition is run in a room with other news writers, other commentary writers, etc.  So, say Adrienne Lane is in a room with 200 other kids from around the nation.  They listen to a news release, they have people there that are interviewed, and then they have an hour and a half to write their story and turn it in to the judges.

RHS Writing Center Announces BEST WRITERS of the QUARTER!

The Rockville High School Writing Center is doing something new this year. We are selecting two “writers of the quarter” each marking period who have done an exemplary job on a common task writing assignment. The student writers will receive a certificate from the Writing Center acknowledging their skill and effort. In addition, their papers will go into an “exemplar bank” that our teachers can use as models when introducing common task writing assignments.  We are hoping that this new initiative will help students learn from real examples of student writing and will reward the efforts of students that may go otherwise unrecognized.

The winners this quarter are George Gomez and Aaron  Kasinitz.
