The Academy Program
The Sligo Creek Elementary School Academy Program implements the MCPS curriculum with a heavy emphasis on science, math, and technology. The Program is dedicated to the students who reside within the designated neighborhood school boundaries.
About the program
Science, math and technology are key components of the Academy Program. A half-time science coordinator provides resources to the school above and beyond what is normally available in other MCPS elementary schools. This coordinator teaches in a well-equipped science lab that was designed and built into the remodeled school. In addition to a wide variety of equipment for measurement and inquiry, the lab features an Automated Weather Source (AWS) weather station that provides continuous real-time weather data both to the school, for instructional purposes, and to the Internet, for use by other students, the public and news outlets worldwide. The lab also houses a fish hatchery system as part of a "raise and release" educational program sponsored by Bay area environmental organizations. Nearby Sligo Creek is within walking distance and is a wonderful location for environmental exploration and discovery.
History of The Academy
The Academy Program has been a fundamental component of Sligo Creek ever since the school was founded in 1999. The school is located in the former Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD. In addition to the Academy Program, Sligo Creek includes The French Immersion magnet program. The enrollment for both programs is approximately 620 students.
