Peer Mediation

Mediation is a way to resolve a conflict between two or more people with the help of a neutral person called a mediator. The mediation process is fairly simple. Mediators meet with students who are in conflict and each disputant tells his/her story and how he/she feels about the problem. Students serve as mediators and a guidance counselor or administrator is present, but does not interfere in the peer mediation process. This process looks for win-win solutions and does not assign blame or guilt. Sligo averages six peer mediations per week which is instrumental in lowering the suspension rate.

SCAT-MSAP

School Community Action Team

The SCAT is a community action team which focuses on the prevention of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use and abuse by our youth. Sligo's team consists of teachers, an administrator a counselor, students and the community. Programs include a guest speaker, drug awareness week, discussion groups and student training.

Student Assistant Program

MSAP is a program for at-risk students. Students are referred by staff members, students and parents. These students receive additional support from counseling groups, participation in drug programs sponsored by SCAT and possibly outside sources as well.

Student Assignment Book

The SAB (student assignment book) is to be carried bystudents at all times. This can increase communication between staff and parents; assist in students organizing themselves; for students to have a record of assignments, and events, and for parents to be able to check on the students progress. There is also a section for passes so that no student is permitted in the halls, without their SAB. There is even a section in the back so students may keep a list of study buddies in each class to call if they are absent.

Alternative Structured Programs

It is Sligo's goal with each student to prepare them to be productive citizens. If a student's inappropriate behavior interferes with their school success, consequences will be applied as to the discipline policy. In School Suspension indicates that a students behavior is so serious that they must be removed from class. The student is expected to change their behavior before returning to the class. They must prove to be on task, cooperative, and taking responsibility for their behavior. They are then asked to make some new goals to be successful.

P.A.S.S.

The P.A.S.S. Program provides intensive guidance and monitoring of high risk students throughout each school day. The goal is for students to achieve at their potential. The areas in which improvement is measured is increased attendance, positive student and staff relations, increased academic achievement and participation in extra-curricular (ie. Student Government, Homework Club). This program is achieved by specific curriculum and schedules. Students are enrolled in the program until they are able to use their resources and have proven success.

Business Partnerships

  • Pepco: provides awards and mentors
  • Mariner Nursing Home: provides incentives for perfect attendance

TV Shows

Sligo has a Television Studio which encompasses three cable channels that enable us to do two shows by remote. We are also able to connect all three channels to show scenes from three different locations simultaneously. Each day we provide a broadcast from WSLI Sligo News. The purpose is to inform the staff and students of coming events, rules, and accomplishments. We are able to entertain in a positive format and provide students with an opportunity to work in the WSLI TV Studio.
