Stedwick Elementary School is one of five schools in Montgomery County to be selected to participate in a new and exciting environmental program, called Trout in the Classroom. Trout in the Classroom is a conservation oriented environmental educational program for elementary, middle, and high school students. Through the remainder of the school year Stedwick’s 5th grade students will raise rainbow trout from eggs and then release them into an approved coldwater stream. This act of raising, monitoring, and caring for the young trout fosters a conservation ethic within participating students and promotes an understanding of their shared water resources.
All fifth grade students will take an active role in this program during their normal science instruction. A fourteen-person team has volunteered to give up their recess one to two times a week in order perform daily maintenance on the 50 gallon cold water tank.
The fifth grade team wrote and received an $800 grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust to make this program possible. |
