What an exciting May we had in the Media Center!
With the help of Dawn Molloy, and the support of a very generous PTA, we were able to host three authors!
Valerie Tripp, author of American Girl and Hopscotch Hill books, spoke to grades 2 and 3 on May 14th. She taught students how to bow or to curtsy like some of the characters in her historical fiction books did, and explained the research, ideas, drafting, and revision it took to make one of her books. Many students enjoyed getting her autograph.
Jane Pinczuk, author of The Music In Me and other books, spoke, danced, and sang for the K and 1 students on May 16th. She explained the steps in having a book published, showing manuscripts, illustration ideas, proofs, and a finished book. Students particularly enjoyed the live version of The Dance in Me.
Mary Downing Hahn, two-time winner of the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Award, visited on May 21. She spoke to fourth graders about where she gets her ideas and answered their very thoughtful questions. She also spoke to fifth graders about why and how she became an author instead of an artist. Students got some inside information about Ms. Hahn's latest book Deep, Dark, and Dangerous as well as a chance to ask questions concerning characters in already familiar books. 12 students won a writing contest and got to eat lunch with Mary Downing Hahn, and many got their books autographed.
Reminder ~ All media center books are due on June 4th. All classes who have all of their books in by this date will receive a special treat from Ms. Safford.
